I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Go through an intensive 3-month site and office-based training program. During this time, you’ll learn everything you need to know about asbestos air monitoring—this means understanding how to test the air in buildings to check for asbestos particles and ensure it’s safe for people to be there.
- Check the level of airborne fibres before starting any work.
- Test for leaks while work is happening to make sure safety measures are working.
- Carry out air testing after the work to confirm it’s safe to remove safety controls and use the area again.
- Report any health and safety concerns to the client and stop work right away if needed.
- Put together a final report with all project details, including waste documents, for the building’s safety file.

- A keen eye for detail and an interest in analytical work—particularly using microscopes is valuable, as you’ll be trained to examine air samples for asbestos fibres.
- Strong time management and organisational skills are essential to manage site schedules, complete reports accurately, and meet client deadlines.
- Clear communication skills, both written and verbal are important for reporting findings and working with clients and colleagues.
- A full manual UK driving licence is required, as this role involves regular travel to client sites across the region.
