Role Description

The Trainee Bench Engineer role is a full-time, on-site position located in Royal Sutton Coldfield. The trainee will assist with the inspection, testing, and repair of various types of encoders under the guidance of experienced engineers. Day-to-day tasks include fault-finding on encoder units, basic soldering and wiring, cleaning and preparing parts, and using test equipment to verify performance. The role also involves documenting work carried out, maintaining an organized bench and workshop area, and supporting stock handling and packing of repaired units. The Trainee Bench Engineer will be expected to follow health and safety procedures, learn company repair standards, and gradually take on more independent technical tasks as skills develop.

  • Basic understanding of electrical and electronic principles, with interest in encoder or motion control technology.
  • Practical skills in using hand tools and test equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes) or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions, diagrams, and repair procedures accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail, careful workmanship, and commitment to quality in all bench activities.
  • Good problem-solving skills, including logical fault-finding and a methodical approach to repairs.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a small technical team.
  • Organizational skills for maintaining a tidy workbench, managing parts, and recording work completed.
  • Relevant vocational training, apprenticeship experience, or ongoing studies in electrical/electronic engineering are beneficial.
  • Willingness to learn, adaptability to new tools and processes, and a positive attitude toward continuous training.
