Job Title: Trainee Biomedical Scientist
Contract Type: Permanent
Applicants who can demonstrate that they already meet the required competencies may be offered a Band 5 contract upon appointment.
Main Duties of the Job
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the Microbiology Department at UHS as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist.
The department processes over 1,000,000 specimens per year. We employ almost 100 staff and provide a comprehensive 7-day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, and parasitology and molecular testing.
We are IBMS accredited for pre-registration training and specialist training in medical microbiology, virology, and infectious science.
The role involves 24/7 working on a shift pattern, including earlies, cores, lates, and night shifts.
You will rotate through sections of the laboratory, providing technical support to Biomedical Scientists and working alongside Biomedical Support Workers. Duties will include processing of clinical samples, maintenance of equipment, and training other members of staff when you have gained competence in section.
Trainee BMS staff would not lead the shift out of hours. Upon registration, you will be the supervisor on shift working alongside an Associate Practitioner and/or Biomedical Support Worker.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
