Is this role for you?
We are looking for motivated people who can bring interest, reliability and a strong work ethic to our Trainee Craftsperson Programme. You'll already have experience working in an industrial, engineering, utility, construction, electrical, or similar operational environment and will recognise the importance of safety, teamwork, and delivering high-quality work.
These roles can be physically demanding and may involve working outdoors at heights, in varying weather conditions, and across operational sites. As such, you'll need a good level of physical fitness and a willingness to work in a practical, hands-on environment.
To be successful, you'll need to demonstrate the drive and focus to develop new technical skills and complete a structured programme of learning. This includes attendance at mandatory technical training courses scheduled throughout the approximately five-month training period. Applicants must be available for this period in full, as successful completion of the training is an essential requirement of the programme.
Where you'll be working
Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. This shift affects every part of our society, and we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.
Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies integrated into the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.
Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century and you can be part of it.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
