Trainee Mobile Crane Operator
Location: Widnes Depot
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: Competitive Starting Rate + Overtime & Benefits (progressing upon qualification)
About the Role
Are you an experienced HGV driver looking to take your driving career to the next level? We are looking for an enthusiastic, safety-conscious individual to join our team as a Trainee Mobile Crane Operator.
Through a structured mentoring and training pathway, you will be trained to operate modern all-terrain mobile cranes while gaining your CPCS / CSCS credentials. You will work alongside experienced operators, crane supervisors, and appointed persons across a diverse range of commercial construction and contract lifting projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely drive and position mobile cranes on public highways and active construction sites in accordance with road traffic law and site traffic management plans.
- Shadow and assist experienced operators with crane rigging, de-rigging, counterweight installation, and matting/outrigger setup.
- Learn to read and execute lift plans, risk assessments, and method statements (RAMS) strictly aligned with BS 7121 and LOLER 1998 standards.
- Conduct daily pre-use vehicle and machine inspections, reporting any defects, wear, or fluid issues promptly.
- Assist with the inspection, maintenance, and safe handling of lifting accessories, tackle, and chains.
- Progress through comprehensive training and assessment to achieve CPCS Mobile Crane Operator certification (Red Card).

What We Are Looking For
- Licence: Valid UK HGV Class 2 (Category C) driving licence is strongly preferred (Class 1 / Category C+E is also welcome).
- Driver CPC & Digi Tacho: Valid Driver Qualification Card (DQC) and Digital Tachograph card with clean or low-points driving record.
- Attitude: A high level of spatial awareness, patience, attention to detail, and an uncompromising commitment to health and safety.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work early mornings, occasional weekends, and overtime to meet operational project requirements.

Advantageous (but not essential):
- Prior experience on construction, industrial, or infrastructure sites.
- Slinger/Signaller experience or CPCS/NPORS/CSCS plant cards.
