I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What are GR1 and IF7?
GR1 and IF7 are professional qualifications awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), and together they form the technical foundation of a career in employee benefits consulting.
GR1 (Group Risk)
GR1 (Group Risk) covers the principles and practice of group life assurance, group income protection, and group critical illness. It equips you with the knowledge to advise employers on protecting their workforce.
IF7 (Healthcare Products)
IF7 (Healthcare Products) covers private medical insurance, cash plans, and other corporate healthcare solutions. It gives you the grounding to help businesses design and manage effective employee healthcare strategies.
The successful applicant will be required to complete additional industry-relevant examinations, qualifications, or certifications. All required professional qualifications are fully funded by Mattioli Woods as part of the Academy programme. No prior knowledge is required - you'll be supported through both exams by expert trainers and your dedicated mentor.
