Trainee Environmental Technician (Chemist)
Location: Regional / Field-Based (Reporting to regional depot)
Salary: £26,088
Enitial (proudly part of the HSL Compliance Group) is the UK’s leading provider of independent field monitoring, sampling, and environmental services. Acting as the vital "boots on the ground" and the public face of our business, we provide a cross-functional service across water utilities, construction, and environmental compliance. If you want a role that gets you away from a static lab bench, out into the field, and offers a company vehicle from day one, this is the perfect career launchpad.
What You’ll Be Doing
This is a unique field-based role that perfectly bridges the gap between environmental chemistry and practical, outdoor field operations. You will split your time across our core service areas of Water, Construction, and Compliance, working flexibly and often autonomously to ensure data integrity remains flawless.
- Responsible for testing incoming industrial and domestic waste streams directly at treatment works, collecting vital environmental compliance samples, and maintaining complex monitoring infrastructure out in the field.
- Perform the official receipt of tankered trade and domestic waste loads, conducting rapid, simple laboratory chemical analysis on physical samples prior to accepting them at sewage treatment works.
- Conduct routine environmental sampling and monitoring across Water, Construction, and Compliance sites in strict accordance with QA protocols and client contract specifications.
- Carry out routine operational checks, calibrations, and preventative maintenance on environmental control systems and monitoring infrastructure.
- Capture and manage data with high precision, reporting findings back to Data Analysts in a timely and accurate format to ensure zero data gaps.
- Liaise directly with commercial laboratories and couriers to ensure that samples captured in the field remain fully compliant and untainted during transport.
- Keep safety at the absolute forefront of your field operations. Meticulously utilise the "Stay Safe" remote working application and proactively report any near misses or accidents immediately.
- Assist with the on-site training and shadowing of new employees, providing a friendly, engaging, and inspiring onboarding experience.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
