About The Role

Balfour Beatty Rail is recruiting for a Trainee Estimator to join our team based in Hillington, Glasgow. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to start their career or take a new career path. The successful candidate will have the chance to develop a wide range of valuable skills while gaining hands-on experience within a leading rail infrastructure business.

In this role you will be responsible for;

  • Ensuring estimating files are produced and maintained to comply with Gated Lifecycle, Bid Governance and Audit requirements
  • Management of subcontract and supplier enquiries as required to support submission of tenders
  • Assist in the hand over from estimating to commercial, operational, procurement, finance functions for all contract wins through the contract hand over and start up process
  • Understand the importance of corporate governance and ensure consistent measures and standards are applied

What you'll be doing

  • Assist in the interpretation of technical drawings and specifications to understand the requirements relating to an enquiry
  • Work collaboratively with the Balfour Beatty Rail Systems team to ensure complete understanding of the works and timelines associated with changes and bid submissions
  • Help to ensure that high quality, competitive proposals are delivered to the customer in line with the Balfour Beatty Management Systems
  • Aid the Senior estimator in tender submissions including ensuring all tenders have a tender stage
  • Help perform quantity take-offs of materials and labour operations
  • Send out enquiries for quotations, analyse quotes, build up rates, form preliminaries and collation of information to complete a tender with client requirements in terms of content, format and timescales
  • Attend pre-tender meetings and site visits
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with customers, partners, Bid Managers, Bid Writers, Estimators, Planners and other technical experts
  • Assist in ensuring all data utilised in tender build ups are current and relevant (e.g., Labour / Plant rates applicable to delivery period)
  • Help to identify process improvement to support innovation and value-added engineering

Who we're looking for

  • Ideally possess three A levels/5 Highers/112 UCAS points or equivalent in STEM subjects or Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering
  • Ideally a minimum of five GCSE’s (or equivalent) at grades 9-4 or A-C including Maths, English and Science or equivalent qualifications
  • Excellent time management & attention to detail skills
  • Good financial acumen with an ability to analyse data and documentation accurately
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Strong and well-developed team and people skills, with a passion and enthusiasm to keep the momentum going on a project.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take responsibility for your academic and vocational development
  • Proficient in general IT applications e.g., Word and Excel
