About Speck & Burke

Speck & Burke designs and installs specialist laboratory gas systems throughout the UK. As our business continues to grow, we are looking for a Trainee Estimator/Designer to join our team in Alva. This is an opportunity to build a long-term career in a specialist engineering sector while receiving structured, practical training.

The role

You will support the preparation of technical designs, bills of quantities, and quotations for pre-designed and design-and-build projects. You will learn how to interpret client requirements, construction information, and relevant standards and turn them into accurate technical and commercial proposals.

Training and development

An experienced member of our team will provide day-to-day training and support. The training will cover our products and systems, estimating methods, technical design, regulatory requirements, and the preparation of client documentation. Your salary will be reviewed following successful completion of the three-month probation period.

Key responsibilities

  • Interpret customer requirements from specifications, drawings, site-survey information, and related documents.
  • Use AutoCAD to prepare and amend technical drawings for specialist gas-system installations.
  • Identify the products, materials, and labour required for each project.
  • Prepare accurate bills of quantities, cost estimates, and quotations.
  • Assist with client-facing technical and commercial documentation.
  • Manage an enquiry workload and meet agreed deadlines.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the regulations and standards applying to compressed gases.
  • Work closely with colleagues, clients, and suppliers to clarify technical information.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
