Trainee Financial Adviser — Protection Specialism, Uncapped Earnings
Build a career where your effort, not your job title, decides what you earn.
Is this the right career for you?
This career rewards specific traits more than a specific background, relationship-building, communication, empathy, and the drive to keep going when no one's watching. If that sounds like you, keep reading.
About us
We're Affinity Advice, a fast-growing protection firm specialising in one of the UK's most underserved, highest-value niches, advising high-earning doctors and dentists on life, critical illness and income protection. We're building our next generation of advisers from the ground up, and we're looking for character and drive over CVs and qualifications. This is a genuinely uncapped, commission-only role once trained and active, no base salary, but no ceiling either.
Your route into advice
- Stage 1 — Get qualified. Self-study for your R05 qualification (the CII's protection-specific exam) alongside your application process with us.
- Stage 2 — Internal training. Complete structured training with our network, PRIMIS, covering compliance and the fundamentals of protection advice.
- Stage 3 — Learn to advise. Build the practical skills of running client conversations, structuring protection recommendations, and closing business under guidance.
- Stage 4 — Supervised advising. Start advising real clients on protection under supervision as you work towards Competent Adviser Status (CAS).
- Stage 5 — Become a fully qualified adviser. Once you achieve CAS, you're advising clients on protection in your own right, with genuinely uncapped earnings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What makes us different
- We're a protection-only firm, so you'll be training and specialising specifically in protection advice, not general financial planning or wealth management.
- You also won't be starting from zero and expected to build a client bank through cold prospecting. Warm, inbound leads come to us daily, doctors and dentists finding us directly, so from day one your time is spent advising, not chasing.
Earning potential
- As a trainee, on average expect earnings of around £35,000-£50,000 a year, based on typical performance for advisers following this structure.
- Once you achieve Certified Adviser Status (CAS), average earnings are approximately £70,000-£75,000 a year, genuinely uncapped from there.
Life as an adviser
This career gives you more control over your working life than most, shaping your week around meeting the leads that come to you, rather than clocking in for someone else. As you progress, you're not just earning more, you're building real expertise and a genuine professional reputation.
