Shetland Islands Council is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team as a Trainee Health & Safety Adviser. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a rewarding professional career within one of Scotland's most diverse organisations, helping to create safe and healthy workplaces that support essential public services.

This role is best suited to individuals with a genuine interest in occupational health and safety as a long-term career. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake professional qualifications and actively engage in learning and development throughout the traineeship. This is a professional training opportunity, and we're looking for someone who is motivated to develop specialist knowledge, skills and experience in the field.
About The Role
As a Trainee Health & Safety Adviser, you will work alongside experienced professionals, receiving structured training, mentoring and support while developing practical experience across a wide range of Council services.
You will have the opportunity to gain experience in areas including:
- Schools and education services
- Health and social care services
- Transport and fleet operations
- Marine and harbour operations
- Construction and property services
- Corporate and office-based environments
You will learn how to identify and assess risks, investigate incidents, develop practical solutions, provide advice and guidance, and support positive health, safety and wellbeing outcomes throughout the organisation.

This vacancy is being advertised as a Career Graded post, which is a career development opportunity. This means that the Council is committed to supporting the successful candidate to obtain the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to become fully competent in the role. Please see the Career Grade document attached to this advert that outlines the entry level requirements for the job and the expected career progression route. The successful candidate will be supported to become fully competent in the role and progress through the career grade. Where there is a requirement to achieve a qualification, this will be fully funded by the Council.

- Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,997 per annum (pro rata)
- Permanent Full Time post for 37.0 Hours per Week, 52.18 weeks per year
- A relocation package does not apply to this post
- We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
- You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
- We are happy to talk flexible working
