NHS Western Isles are pleased to invite applications for SCPHN Health Visitor Trainee post in Uist and Barra as part of our commitment to improving outcomes for children, young people and families and to developing a skilled, compassionate Health Visiting workforce.
This is an exciting opportunity for registered nurses and midwives who are motivated to build on their existing strengths, leadership skills and professional experience to progress into a Health Visiting role.
About The Programme
Successful applicants will undertake the Postgraduate Diploma – Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) at Robert Gordons University, commencing 14th September 2026. The programme is a full-time commitment over one academic year and combines:
- Academic study on line - Postgraduate Diploma Level 11.
- Supervised clinical learning in practice Western Isles
On appointment, you will be employed as a Trainee Health Visitor aligned to the duration of the programme. This opportunity will be offered under ANNEX 21, with the assurance of a substantive post within Uist and Barra on successful completion of the SCPHN HV programme.
Clinical learning will take place within the Western Isles, supported by an allocated Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor.

Salary and Terms
Salary will be in line with Agenda for Change, Band 7 Annex 21 during training, in accordance with National guidance.
Annual leave during the training year will align with the University academic calendar to meet NMC training requirements.
Who Can Apply
Applications are welcomed from Registered Nurses and Midwives with current NMC Registration.
Candidates should be NMC registered and normally hold evidence of study at Honours level. This may be demonstrated through a first degree with Honours, or successful completion of an Honours level module within the past five years, alongside evidence of recent academic engagement and leadership development.

For applicants with substantial and relevant clinical experience but who do not meet the academic qualification, you may be shortlisted and invited to demonstrate Honours-level academic capability through the submission of an enhanced (essay-style) CV. If shortlisted, you will be contacted and provided with a template which allows you to map your relevant transferable skills, leadership, and practice experience to the specified criteria. This will be reviewed by the Programme Lead to confirm that a suitable level of academic ability has been demonstrated (note: no grade or academic credit is awarded for this).
Practitioners who can evidence motivation for Health Visiting and a commitment to improving outcomes for children and families.
Applicants should have relevant professional experience and be able to demonstrate the leadership, communication and organisational skills required for this Band 7 trainee.

- Your motivation and rationale for undertaking the SCPHN Health Visiting programme to become a SCPHN Health Visitor.
- Your understanding of the Health Visitor role.
- The transferable skills, experience and strengths you would bring to Health Visiting practice. This will include leadership competencies required to manage a caseload and improve outcomes for children.
Applicants are encouraged to discuss this opportunity with their current line manager and ensure that one referee is their current line manager.
You must be free to take up this on 14th September 2026.
You must demonstrate ongoing academic and clinical practice progress throughout the course and complete the one-year SCPHN program by September 2027.

Trainees follow University calendar for all holidays during the course and cannot take leave out with this. This is to meet NMC 52-week training requirement.
Normal NHS leave entitlement is suspended for year of training.
