Are you a compassionate listener who enjoys helping people navigate life's challenges? At Age UK York, we're passionate about supporting older people to live rewarding and independent lives. We're looking for a Trainee Information & Advice Adviser to join our friendly and dedicated team, helping older people access the support, services and benefits they need.
You'll provide information, guidance and practical support to older people on a wide range of topics including welfare benefits, housing, community care, disability rights and local services.
You'll Develop Expertise In Areas Such As
- Welfare benefits and benefit entitlement checks
- Completing benefit claims
- Social care and paying for care
Full training will be provided, we're looking for someone with the enthusiasm to learn and develop their knowledge, with a potential to undertake an NVQ in Information, Advice and Guidance.
What You'll Be Doing
- Providing information and advice to older people.
- Carrying out benefits checks and explaining entitlements.
- Supporting clients to complete applications and claim forms.
- Maintaining accurate and detailed case records.
- Participating in peer reviews and quality assurance activities to maintain our Advice Quality Standard accreditation.
- Delivering outreach sessions

About You
You'll be someone who enjoys working with people and can communicate confidently and sensitively, even during difficult conversations.
We're Particularly Interested In Candidates Who Have
- Excellent communication and listening skills.
- The ability to explain complex information in a clear way.
- A keen interest in welfare benefits.
- Strong attention to detail and good record-keeping.
- Resilience and the ability to support people facing challenging circumstances.
- Access to transport and the ability to travel across the City of York.
Experience in welfare benefits advice is desirable, but we welcome applicants with a genuine interest in developing through training and support.
Please Note
- Lone working is a requirement of this role.
- The role involves a mixture of office-based, community and home-visiting work across York.
