Purpose of the Role

The Trainee Installation Engineer will support the delivery of electrical and infrastructure installation projects under the guidance of experienced engineers and electricians. The role is designed to provide practical experience, technical knowledge, and professional development opportunities, enabling the successful candidate to progress towards an Improver and ultimately a qualified Installation Engineer role.

The position involves working across a variety of sectors, including railway infrastructure, electrical installations, telecommunications, and electric vehicle charging projects throughout the UK. The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to learn, develop technical skills, and contribute positively to project delivery while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Lead Engineers and Electricians with the installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Support the installation of wiring systems, containment, enclosures, electrical equipment, and associated components.
  • Carry out tasks as directed by Lead Engineers while developing technical competence and practical skills.
  • Learn and apply electrical installation techniques in accordance with company procedures and industry standards.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship, quality, and attention to detail.
  • Assist with site preparation, equipment handling, and material management activities.
  • Support inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and fault-finding activities as experience develops.
  • Comply with all Health & Safety policies, procedures, and safe working practices.
  • Maintain a professional and positive relationship with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and colleagues.
  • Contribute to a safe, productive, and collaborative working environment.
  • Attend and successfully complete all required training courses and competency assessments.
  • Work towards achieving recognised industry qualifications and professional development milestones.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the level and nature of the role.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including Mathematics, English and Science.
  • Demonstrable interest in engineering, electrical installations, telecommunications, infrastructure, or related technical fields.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Problem-solving aptitude and logical thinking.
  • Reliable, trustworthy, and dependable.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety.
  • Willingness to travel and work at locations throughout the UK.

Desirable

  • Relevant engineering or electrical qualification, apprenticeship, or college course.
  • Previous site-based, construction, infrastructure, or electrical experience.
  • Basic understanding of electrical installation practices.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Familiarity with hand tools and basic electrical equipment.

Training and Development

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Complete Personal Track Safety (PTS) training and associated medical assessments, including Drug and Alcohol screening, before commencing work on rail infrastructure projects.
  • Work towards industry-recognised qualifications, including:
    • NVQ in Electrotechnical Services
    • City & Guilds Electrical Qualifications
    • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • Develop the technical skills and practical experience necessary to progress into an Improver and future Installation Engineer position.

Working Conditions

Due to the nature of the role:

  • Occasional travel throughout the UK will be required.
  • Occasional overnight stays away from home may be necessary.
  • Occasional night shifts and weekend working will be required to support customer and project requirements.
  • Work may be undertaken in rail, infrastructure, industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
