Help us create a better future, quicker
Our energy landscape is going through a period of profound change. Electricity will be at the heart of the transition to a cleaner, greener future, supporting the growth of renewable generation, electric vehicles and low-carbon heating.
Within SP Energy Networks, we are investing in technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. Our Field Technicians install, commission, maintain and fault-find on the specialist systems that protect, monitor and control the electricity network. By joining this programme, you can be part of that transformation while developing a rewarding technical career.
What you'll be doing
As a Trainee Field Technician, you can expect to learn while working through our structured three-year development programme. This combines technical training from experienced instructors and operational colleagues, academic study at Forth Valley College to obtain a Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering and hands-on workplace experience in sites and operational environments. You will also receive coaching and mentoring from experienced colleagues.
As your knowledge and experience develop, so will your responsibilities. You can expect to be exposed to:
- Installation, commissioning and maintenance of network apparatus.
- Distribution protection and battery systems.
- SCADA and telecontrol equipment.
- Telecommunications apparatus.
- Online monitoring equipment and network controllable points.
- Defect diagnosis using PC-based diagnostic tools.
- Site activities in line with safety management systems.
- Technical records, quality standards and work programmes.
- Stakeholder engagement and communications including internal colleagues, contractors and customers.
You will initially undertake activities under appropriate supervision. As you demonstrate the required knowledge, practical competence and safety behaviours, you will progressively work towards the relevant technical and operational authorisations.
You will be supported throughout the programme, but you will also be expected to take responsibility for your own learning, maintaining your training records and demonstrating that you can apply your knowledge safely and effectively in the workplace.
Attendance at college, training and workplace locations is a key requirement and may involve regular travel and periods away from home.
On successful completion of the programme, you will progress into a Field Technician role - subject to meeting all required performance, competence and authorisation standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
