The John Taylor SCITT
The John Taylor SCITT has been delivering Initial Teacher Education across the West and East Midlands since 2014, with a strong track record in inspirational training, high trainee employment rates, and exceptional pastoral support. Located in a bespoke Training Centre on the John Taylor High School site in Barton-under-Needwood (DE13 8AZ), it offers a professional yet welcoming environment for developing teachers.
The centre is easily accessible within a 30-minute commute from a wide range of nearby towns and cities, making it convenient for trainees across the region. As a relatively small provider, the SCITT knows each trainee personally and provides highly tailored guidance, helping trainees achieve excellent outcomes and succeed in their teaching careers.
Role Description
The Trainee Teacher role is a full-time, on-site position based at the Training Centre in Barton-under-Needwood and in partner schools across the region. Trainees will plan and deliver lessons under supervision, support classroom learning, and gradually take on increasing responsibility for teaching groups and classes. Daily activities include preparing lesson materials, assessing pupil progress, managing behavior, and participating in staff meetings and school events.

Trainees will engage in professional development sessions, receive mentoring, observe experienced teachers, and reflect on their practice to meet the Teachers’ Standards. The role involves working collaboratively with school staff and the SCITT team to ensure high-quality learning experiences for pupils and a strong training experience for the trainee.

Qualifications
- Strong subject knowledge in a chosen teaching discipline and enthusiasm for working with children and young people.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families.
- Organizational and time-management abilities to plan lessons, manage workload, and meet deadlines.
- Reflective and resilient mindset, with the capacity to respond constructively to feedback and adapt teaching approaches.
- Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and promoting the well-being and progress of all learners.
- Ability to work collaboratively in school teams and contribute to a supportive, professional learning environment.
- A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) that meets Initial Teacher Training entry requirements; GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics, and Science for primary, as required.
- Experience working or volunteering in educational or youth settings is beneficial but not essential.
- Eligibility to train and work in the UK, with willingness to travel to partner schools within commuting distance.
