JAB Recruitment is supporting a leading UK energy operator with the appointment of an experienced Training & Competence Advisor to join their Facilities Engineering team.

This is a 2-year contract opportunity, aligned with the planned cessation of production at a major UK gas hub, with an ASAP start to support a new organizational structure going live from 1 October 2026.

  • Location: Barrow-in-Furness
  • Contract: 2 years
  • Start: ASAP
  • Hybrid working: 4 days per week in the office

The current non-contractual hybrid working arrangement requires Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office, with the fourth office day being either Monday or Friday depending on team requirements. Full-time office working is also available if preferred.

The successful candidate will provide specialist Training & Competence advisory services, maintaining standards, procedures, and systems and ensuring consistent best practice across operated assets.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing training and competence assurance frameworks across operated assets
  • Maintaining competence registers, job profiles, and Training & Competence Management Systems
  • Developing assessment programmes for Safety Critical, Operational Critical, and Technical roles
  • Providing governance and assurance of operational training and competence
  • Supporting assessors, verifiers, and functional competence frameworks
  • Developing and maintaining training and competence standards, procedures, and processes
  • Producing training, competence, and KPI reports
  • Establishing assessment programmes for Emergency Management and Emergency Response Teams
  • Delivering annual training and competence assurance programmes
  • Acting as contract owner for third-party training booking services
  • Supporting audits, inspections, and regulatory assurance activities
  • Preparing training budgets and monitoring spend
  • Maintaining relevant training and assessment records for contracting personnel

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Strong Training & Competence Management experience within upstream oil & gas
  • Detailed knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements relating to training and competence
  • Knowledge of Safety Case requirements and competence assurance standards
  • Experience developing and maintaining competence criteria and assessment frameworks
  • A Production Operations background
  • Previous offshore asset experience
  • Several years' experience in training management
  • Strong stakeholder management, facilitation, and influencing skills
  • Valid BOSIET and Offshore Medical
  • Flexibility to undertake regular offshore visits
