Transport and Operation Planner

Flexible location, ideally within 2 hours driving time of London.

Reports to: Transport and Operations Manager

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Planner to coordinate haulage and EV charging operations within a growing electric vehicle (EV) transport fleet. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning vehicle movements, allocating resources, optimising routes, managing charging schedules, and ensuring efficient delivery performance while maintaining compliance with transport regulations and sustainability objectives. This role requires strong logistical planning skills, excellent communication abilities, and an understanding of the operational requirements associated with electric commercial vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

Transport Planning & Scheduling

  • Develop and manage daily, weekly, and long-term transport plans.
  • Allocate vehicles, drivers, and resources to maximise operational efficiency.
  • Optimise routes considering customer requirements, traffic conditions, vehicle range, charging infrastructure, and delivery deadlines.
  • Monitor fleet utilisation and identify opportunities to improve productivity and reduce costs.
  • Respond effectively to operational disruptions and implement contingency plans.
  • Forecasting and booking of agency staff to ensure full utilisation of fleet.
  • Organisation of spot hire work to drive vehicle revenue and performance.

  • Coordinate vehicle charging schedules to ensure fleet readiness.
  • Monitor battery performance, vehicle range, and charging requirements.
  • Plan routes with consideration for charging station availability and charging durations.
  • Work closely with maintenance teams to minimise vehicle downtime.
  • Support the transition and expansion of electric fleet operations.

Customer & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Liaise with customers regarding delivery schedules, collection times, and service updates.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, depot teams, maintenance personnel, and external partners.
  • Provide timely updates on delays, route changes, or operational issues.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with charging network providers and transport partners.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Plan and coordinate services, MOT inspections, routine maintenance, and repair schedules, ensuring all vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure transport plans comply with relevant transport legislation, driver hours regulations, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and planning documentation.
  • Produce performance reports relating to fleet utilisation, delivery performance, charging efficiency, and operational KPIs.
  • Support audits and compliance inspections as required.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve route efficiency, fleet utilisation, and operational sustainability.
  • Analyse operational data to support decision-making.
  • Assist with the implementation of transport management systems and fleet optimisation technologies.
  • Contribute to environmental and carbon reduction initiatives.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Experience in transport planning, logistics planning, haulage operations, or fleet coordination.
  • Strong understanding of transport and logistics operations.
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Experience using Transport Management Systems (TMS) or fleet management software.
  • Ability to analyse operational data and generate reports.

Desirable

  • Experience working with electric commercial vehicles or sustainable transport operations.
  • Knowledge of EV charging infrastructure and charging management.
  • Understanding of vehicle telematics and fleet optimisation software.
  • CPC Transport Operations knowledge or relevant logistics qualification.
  • Experience in route optimisation and network planning.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including Mathematics and English.
  • Relevant experience within transport, logistics, haulage, or fleet planning.

Desirable

  • Transport Manager CPC qualification.
  • Logistics, Supply Chain, or Transport-related qualification.
  • Degree or equivalent in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
