Hovis Distribution Manager

Welcome to Hovis. We are the proud guardians of over 130 years of baking experience that make up our iconic and much-loved brand. We produce bread and bakery products created with Hovis goodness at the heart of each. We deliver around 1.3million loaves, every day of the week throughout the UK and Ireland, where we also make Mothers Pride and Ormo products.

We are 2,800 people working within 8 bakeries, 1 flour mill, and 2 regional distribution centres across the UK. Our success is a result of the hard work of our people; they are experts in their field whether it’s baking, manufacturing, logistics, engineering, or the many departments within the central functions team based in our head office in High Wycombe. Purpose

As a key member of the site logistics team, you are responsible for safely developing and managing all aspects of the distribution network including Radial, RDC and Inter bakery transport operations from your site. You will ensure that the operation meets all customer requirements including 3rd party, provides excellent customer service, meets all quality standards, optimises efficiencies and minimises costs whilst improving our carbon footprint.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Drive a legal and safety culture by improving and maintaining a safe working environment, ensuring all team members are aware and complying with health and safety standards, legal and company requirements
  • Effective leadership, development and motivation of the Transport team to ensure all transport KPI’s are met and/or exceeded.
  • Building a positive and effective relationship with the transport union on site, ensuring all negotiations are successfully completed on time.
  • Continually reviewing practices, identifying and implementing transport related initiatives within your bakery or across bakeries that maximise all transport performance on Radial, Inter Bakery and 3rd party to reduce overall operating costs and enhance customer service.
  • Identify, drive and deliver in conjunction with other site personnel site and regional PDP’s.
  • Proactively monitor and reduce sales losses.
  • Build and develop effective relationships with the management team on site to ensure cross functional working to ensure best practice is shared and the optimal performance of the function is achieved.

Essential Criteria

  • Transport Manager CPC in Road Haulage
  • 5-10 years' experience managing teams within a transport, logistics, distribution or operational environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of transport legislation, compliance and health & safety requirements.
  • A visible leadership style, leading by example and championing a "Safety First" culture throughout the operation.
  • Proven experience leading transport operations and developing high-performing teams.
  • Sound understanding of transport management systems, telematics and data-driven performance management.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and influence positive outcomes with employees, customers and suppliers.
  • A customer-focused mindset, always striving to deliver exceptional service.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in a comparable role in a Blue chip, FMCG Warehousing environment desirable.
  • Commercial knowledge within the multidrop convenience sector
  • Presence on an Operator’s Licence
  • SAP system experience.

  • Health and safety and Legal compliance – ensuring the transport team meet all H&S standards, legal and audit requirements.
