Job Purpose
The Transport Planner is responsible for the planning, coordination, and monitoring of transport movements, ensuring deliveries and collections are completed efficiently, safely, and in line with operational requirements. The role focuses on day-to-day planning activity, supporting service delivery and operational performance.
Duties and Responsibilities
Transport Planning
- Plan and schedule collections and deliveries in line with customer requirements, available capacity and delivery times.
- Allocate drivers, vehicles and trailers, taking account of routes, availability and operational constraints.
- Review upcoming work to identify capacity gaps, conflicting bookings or other issues before plans are confirmed.
- Adjust plans when volumes, priorities or resources change.
Live Operations and Communication
- Monitor transport movements throughout the day and respond promptly to delays, breakdowns, missed collections and other disruptions.
- Give drivers clear instructions and keep them updated when plans change.
- Liaise with depots, warehouses, customer service and other planning teams to keep work moving.
- Provide timely updates on delays or service issues and help agree practical solutions.
- Complete clear handovers so outstanding work and risks are understood by the next planner or shift.

Compliance and Records
- Plan work in line with applicable drivers' hours and working time requirements, company procedures and vehicle requirements.
- Check that the information and documentation needed for each movement are available, escalating gaps before they affect delivery.
- Keep the Transport Management System and planning records accurate and up to date.
- Record changes, delays and service issues so they can be followed up and reported accurately.
Performance and Improvement
- Support the tracking of delivery performance, vehicle utilisation and other operational KPIs.
- Identify recurring planning or service issues and suggest improvements to routes, processes and communication.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
Essential
- Experience in transport planning, logistics, or operational coordination
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Clear communication skills
- Confident using Transport Management Systems (TMS) and Microsoft Office
Desirable
- Knowledge of Ireland/Europe/UK transport networks
- Understanding of driver hours and transport compliance
- Experience in high-volume or multi-drop operations
