Transport Planning Project Manager
Salary: £65,000 – £72,500 DOE
Location: Cambridge - Office Based
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Project Manager to play a key role in the continued growth and success of our client based in Cambridge.
The role combines technical delivery, project leadership, team management, client relationships and business development. You will be responsible for leading projects from inception through to completion, ensuring they are delivered to a high technical and commercial standard, while also developing new opportunities and strengthening existing client relationships.
As an Associate, you will also have an important role in supporting and developing the wider team. This includes mentoring junior colleagues, managing workloads and resources, providing technical guidance and helping team members achieve their professional and career goals.
You will be expected to contribute to the commercial performance of the business through effective project management, financial control, invoicing and debt management, while maintaining the high standards and reputation of our client.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People
- Lead, manage and support project teams, creating a positive and collaborative working environment.
- Mentor and develop junior and less experienced members of the team.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and appraisals, identifying training and development opportunities.
- Support colleagues with their professional development and career progression.
- Plan and manage team resources to ensure projects are appropriately staffed and workloads are effectively balanced.
- Encourage knowledge sharing, technical development and best practice across the business.
Project Delivery
- Take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of projects, ensuring they meet agreed scope, programme, budget and quality requirements.
- Lead day-to-day project activities and coordinate project teams and external consultants.
- Prepare, review and oversee technical reports, documents and other project deliverables.
- Prepare and review preliminary and detailed infrastructure design drawings.
- Provide technical input and direction throughout the planning and development process.
- Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with relevant standards, legislation and company procedures.
- Manage and negotiate planning matters, including planning conditions and associated legal agreements.
- Ensure appropriate Health & Safety procedures are followed, including the preparation and review of risk assessments and supporting documentation.
- Prepare formal statements and technical evidence for public inquiries where required.

Commercial Management
- Prepare and review fee proposals, scopes of work and project budgets.
- Monitor project performance against agreed budgets, programmes and resources.
- Identify and manage changes to project scope and associated commercial implications.
- Regularly review project profitability and take appropriate action where required.
- Ensure accurate and timely invoicing across projects.
- Monitor outstanding fees and support effective debt management.
- Identify commercial risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
Clients & Business Development
- Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities for new work and support the development of existing client accounts.
- Contribute to bids, tenders, fee proposals and other business development activities.
- Develop a strong understanding of client requirements and identify opportunities to provide further support and services.
- Represent Transport Planning Associates at industry events, professional forums, consultation events and stakeholder meetings.
- Maintain and enhance the reputation of the business through high-quality project delivery and professional client relationships.
Strategic Contribution
- Contribute to the continued growth and development of Transport Planning Associates.
- Promote high standards of technical quality, professional practice and client service.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, project delivery and ways of working.
- Encourage innovation and continuous improvement across projects and teams.
- Support the implementation of the company's strategic objectives.
- Deputise for the Associate Director or Director when required.

About You
We are looking for an experienced transport planning professional who combines strong technical capability with commercial awareness, leadership and excellent client management skills.
You will ideally have:
- A professional qualification in an appropriate discipline and active membership of a relevant professional body.
- Significant experience delivering transport planning and/or infrastructure projects.
- Experience managing projects from inception through to completion.
- Experience leading and developing project teams, including mentoring less experienced colleagues.
- Strong commercial awareness and experience managing project budgets, fees and profitability.
- Experience developing client relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
- A proactive approach to problem solving and decision making.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
- The confidence and professional credibility to represent the business with clients, stakeholders and industry partners.
- A collaborative approach and a genuine interest in supporting the development of others.
