Transport Shift Manager
The Transport Shift Manager will have the ability to co-ordinate the planning effort required to fulfil the daily national collection and delivery requirement for approximately 2000 consignments. There is a high level of complexity with interlocking and overlapping delivery footprints which the jobholder must understand in order to deliver a 98% service level at best cost to the business.
Role Overview
The Transport Shift Manager is a key leadership role. They should lead by example and have the capacity to contribute to driving and shaping the culture and approach of the Transport Department on a daily basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Transport Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day planning, execution, and financial reporting of the Road Logistics domestic C&D operation.
- Build and maintain a highly efficient, competent, and committed 24/7 Transport team that works collaboratively with other Road Logistics departments.
- Ensure staff and drivers are competent, aware of company procedures, and trained on appropriate work instructions.
- Drive efficiency to optimize the number of drivers and vehicles required and lead by example to develop highly engaged teams.
- Continuously review processes to identify improvement opportunities.
- Line Manager Responsibility for a team of planners and operators.
- Deputise for the Transport Manager when required.
- Through a dedicated team of transport planners and operators, utilize the domestic network of Distribution Partners, Contractors, and Owned Fleet assets to plan and execute daily collection and delivery activities for the Road Logistics business.
- Manage attendance to maintain proper staffing levels and appropriate skill levels in the department at all times.
- Management of dangerous goods within the KN Dangerous Goods procedures and working instructions.
- Commend or reprimand employees as appropriate and deal with disciplinary hearings at the written warning level.
- Investigate and report on complaints and non-conformances for the Transport Manager. Implementation of corrective actions.

What We Would Like You to Bring
- CPC Holder National and International (Desirable but must achieve within 12 months of taking role).
- People management experience with a track record of driving good behaviors and cultures within a team. Experience of managing operations and people through change (Essential).
- Experience of running a collection and delivery transport operation in a demanding, fast-paced, and customer-centric environment.
- Transport Finance awareness.
- An excellent level of IT literacy.
- NVQ Level 3 Management Qualification (Desirable).
- IOSH Managing Safety – (Desirable but must achieve within 12 months of taking role).
- Driving Licence.
- Leadership, motivational, and influencing skills to achieve results.
- Organisational skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Good written and verbal communication style with a team ethic and customer-focused attitude.
- Understand the cost drivers in a transport operation and commercial awareness.
