Help a small charity supporting displaced Afghan judges, prosecutors and lawyers set up a proper digital accounting system and simple, sustainable bookkeeping processes with scope to take on an ongoing treasurer-style role supporting our finances longer term, if you're able and willing.
What difference will you make?
JSI exists to help legal professionals who have been targeted for upholding the rule of law reach safety and rebuild their lives and careers. As a young organisation funded entirely by donations and pro bono support, sound financial management underpins everything we do; it's what lets our board make informed decisions, gives our funders confidence in how their money is used, and frees up our small team to focus on protecting people at risk rather than wrestling with spreadsheets.
Right now, gaps in our financial systems slow us down and add risk at a time when we're growing quickly. A volunteer who can help us build a proper digital system will give us accurate, real-time oversight of our finances, make it far easier to report back to funders and our board, and put us on a stronger footing to secure the grants that keep our casework, and our support for at-risk lawyers and judges, running.
What are we looking for?
Most important is hands-on experience setting up or migrating an organisation onto a digital accounting system from a more basic starting point. We need someone who's done this before, not someone learning as they go. Beyond that, experience with small charities, CICs, or other non-profits is a strong plus, particularly any familiarity with restricted/unrestricted grant income and reporting to funders or a board.

Just as important as the technical skill is temperament we need someone patient and clear explaining financial concepts to a non-finance team, comfortable proposing a sensible system rather than waiting to be told exactly what we want, and happy working flexibly and independently with a small, busy organisation. Discretion is essential, since our financial records connect to sensitive casework. Formal accountancy qualifications are welcome but not required; what matters most is relevant, practical experience.

What will you be doing?
Justice Support International (JSI) is a Cambridge-based Community Interest Company supporting displaced judges, prosecutors, and lawyers from Afghanistan who are in transit through Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey. We're a young, fast-growing organisation funded entirely by donations and pro bono legal support, run by a small team, and we're looking for a volunteer to help us professionalise our financial management.

We currently manage our accounts through basic spreadsheets. We need someone to recommend and help set up a proper digital accounting system (e.g. Xero or QuickBooks) suited to a small CIC, migrate our existing records into it, and establish simple, repeatable processes for expense tracking, grant income coding, and monthly reconciliation. Depending on your interest and availability, this could grow into an ongoing role, including light bookkeeping, preparing management accounts for the board, and supporting funder reporting.
We're looking for someone with at least three years' professional accounting or bookkeeping experience, ideally with small charities, CICs, or non-profits, and particularly experience setting up accounting systems from scratch. Charity-specific qualifications aren't required, but familiarity with restricted/unrestricted grant income is a bonus. Just as important as technical skill is patience explaining financial concepts to a non-finance team, and comfort working flexibly and remotely with a small, busy organisation. Fully remote; an initial setup phase of a few hours a week for 4–8 weeks, then a lighter ongoing commitment if you continue.
