Use your financial expertise to help a growing local dementia charity build a sustainable future
Guide our Board's financial oversight, chair the Finance Subcommittee and help us support more people living with dementia and their carers across the Wirral Peninsula.
What difference will you make?
Strong financial leadership is essential to Dementia Together Wirral's ability to grow safely and sustainably. Your oversight will help the Board understand the charity's true financial position, anticipate pressures, manage risk and make well-informed decisions about services, staffing, investment and future premises.
By strengthening budgeting, forecasting, controls, reserves planning and financial reporting, you will help protect the charity's resources and give trustees, funders and partners confidence in their management. You will also help us prepare for the greater financial complexity that may accompany further growth, including a possible future move from receipts and payments accounts to accrual accounting.
This financial resilience has a direct human impact. It will help us sustain and develop welcoming activities that provide people living with dementia with stimulation, friendship, confidence and belonging, while offering carers reassurance, companionship and respite. It will also improve our ability to reach more communities across Wirral, develop new services and plan confidently for a central administrative and activity hub.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Professional financial experience and the ability to interpret budgets, management accounts, forecasts and annual statements;
- An understanding of effective financial controls, risk management, reserves and organisational sustainability;
- The ability to explain financial information clearly and make it accessible to trustees who are not finance specialists;
- A willingness to play an active role in forecasting, budget setting, financial policy development and liaison with auditors; and
- The ability to think strategically, exercise independent judgement and offer constructive support and challenge.
Knowledge of charity finance would be an advantage, but is not essential if you bring sound commercial finance experience, an understanding of small and medium-sized organisations and enthusiasm for learning the charity context. Experience of receipts and payments or accrual accounting, and of helping an organisation manage growth, would also be useful.
Like every trustee, you should be enthusiastic about our purpose, able to work effectively with colleagues and committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and the Nolan principles of public life. We also welcome lived experience of dementia or caring, and insight into communities that face barriers to support. Previous trustee experience is not required as a structured induction, training and support will be provided.

Dementia Together Wirral currently has a Board of five trustees and is seeking two or three new members, including a Treasurer. We have grown rapidly and now support more than 700 members. Our annual income has increased from approximately £22,000 in 2020/21 to approximately £196,000 in 2025/26, bringing both opportunity and a need for strong financial leadership as we plan our next stage.
As Treasurer, you will maintain a Board-level overview of the charity's finances and chair the Finance Subcommittee, which meets quarterly. Working closely with the Charity Manager, you will oversee the presentation of budgets, management accounts, and annual statements; help ensure there are sound records, controls, and financial policies; monitor financial viability; and advise on reserves, cost management, forecasting, and the financial implications of our strategy and risks.
You will advise on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors, help ensure the accounts are prepared and submitted in the form required by the Charity Commission, and build the Board's understanding of its financial responsibilities. The role is one of oversight and strategic leadership rather than day-to-day bookkeeping.
Our priorities include securing long-term financial stability, diversifying fundraising, seeking multi-year funding, developing our infrastructure and exploring a central hub. We currently use receipts and payments accounts, although continued growth could lead to a move to accrual accounting.
