We're seeking a qualified accountant to oversee the Trust’s financial affairs, and who shares our passion for maritime heritage.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the routine financial activities of the Trust, cash position, VAT returns and annual financial accounts.

What difference will you make?

As a trustee and qualified accountant, you can help us ensure The Matthew's long-term operation as a seaworthy vessel. This will enable us to continue promoting the advancement of education in the local and national history and heritage associated with the ship, and celebrating the explorer John Cabot and the exploration and settlement of the New World.

The Treasurer will oversee budgets, routine financial management and financial planning. The role will also involve explaining financial affairs to non-financial members of the Board of Trustees.

You'll also have an essential role in helping to shape the Trust’s direction and governance, support long-term planning for preservation, learning and community engagement, and work with a committed board and crew of volunteers to keep a historic ship alive for future generations.

What are we looking for?

Financial management

  • Manage bank accounts and compliance with bank requirements.
  • Make deposits and process payments using online banking.
  • Operate our financial systems based on QuickBooks and the accounting aspects of our ticketing system.
  • Ensure satisfactory financial controls are operating.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What will you be doing?

As treasurer, you'll have an essential role in contributing to the continued operation of The Matthew of Bristol.

This year, we're focusing on building back our cash reserves, which have been depleting since the COVID-19 pandemic. These reserves, once used to buffer against maintenance and revenue cycles, have now reached critically low levels.

We also have a significant milestone on the horizon – 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of The modern Matthew setting sail for North America, tracing the route of John Cabot’s 1497 voyage of exploration, and we’re planning projects to strengthen our impact on heritage, education and community engagement.

We are therefore seeking a trustee treasurer who can contribute to the strategic development of the charity and who shares our passion for maritime heritage and public education.
