RSPCA Bournemouth: Experienced Treasurer Position

RSPCA Bournemouth are in need of an experienced Treasurer to oversee our accounts, advise on financial and investment strategies, with a proven ability to present financial information clearly to trustees and stakeholders.

What difference will you make?

The Treasurer plays a vital role in overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation, ensuring that its finances are managed responsibly and in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements. This role involves:

  • Maintaining accurate financial records (alongside the bookkeeper)
  • Recommending investment opportunities
  • Preparing financial reports for the board
  • Ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people who are interested in animal welfare and have experience of being a Trustee in small charities.

The ideal candidate will have experience in all of the following aspects of the role:

  • Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
  • Liaise with the Clinic Manager and committee members to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.
  • Make fellow committee members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
  • Regularly report the financial position at committee meetings (bimonthly) (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc).
  • Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place associated with purchases, petty cash, payroll etc. Day to day bookkeeping and payroll is done by a qualified bookkeeper so you would be working alongside her.
  • Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.
  • Advise the board on investments

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What will you be doing?

RSPCA Bournemouth is in a period of transition, and became a CIO on February 26. We run a veterinary clinic, with subsidised prices to assist people on low incomes. The challenge is balancing the books - the clinic historically works at a constant loss (in the past, we've been fortunate to receive some major legacies). The Treasurer will work closely with other Trustees and staff to maximise the potential income needed to cover this loss without eating into our reserves.

A number of the current board are coming to the end of their terms, including the Treasurer.

The Treasurer will work closely with the Chairman of the Board and with the Clinic Manager to ensure the smooth running of the finances. An experienced bookkeeper maintains Xero and does payroll, and will be supported by the Treasurer.

Location

Applicants must be based within a reasonable distance of our operating area, namely, Bournemouth and West Hampshire, and able to attend at least some Board meetings in Bournemouth in person.
