The Treasurer

The Treasurer is a Trustee of the Association for the Study of Obesity providing strategic leadership and oversight of the charity’s financial affairs. The Treasurer works with the Board of Trustees, Operational Management Team and contracted support to ensure financial sustainability.

What difference will you make?

ASO’s recent Board Skills Review identified financial oversight, financial confidence, fundraising capability and long-term sustainability planning as priority development areas for the Board. The Treasurer therefore plays a key leadership role in

  • Strengthening financial reporting and transparency.
  • Supporting Trustee understanding of financial governance.
  • Improving financial sustainability and income diversification.
  • Contributing to risk management and organisational resilience.
  • Supporting the Board’s development of stronger governance and compliance arrangements.

What are we looking for?

Person specification

  • A commitment to ASO and passion for its cause.
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort and engage with and respond to ASO communications in a timely manner.
  • Strategic vision.
  • Good, independent judgement.
  • An ability to think creatively.
  • A willingness to speak their mind and to hear and consider the opinions of others.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • A clear understanding of Charity Commission guidance and recommendations, or willingness to develop this understanding through induction and training.
  • A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
  • Ability to contribute to an open, inclusive and constructive Board culture.

Specific skills and experience

  • Experience of governance, strategic decision-making, finance, legal, fundraising, digital governance, communications, research, clinical, academic, commercial or third-sector leadership.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Understanding of the third sector and/or previous experience as a Trustee and/or experience working on committees where governance is integral.
  • Specialist knowledge in legal/regulatory compliance, finance, fundraising/income generation or cyber/data governance would be particularly welcome in light of identified Board skills gaps.
  • Willingness to undertake training in governance, charity law, cyber security, data protection and finance where required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
