Treasurer for Transition Edinburgh South

We’re seeking a Treasurer to join our board and help us look after the financial side of Transition Edinburgh South. This voluntary role is about helping a small, ambitious, community-led organisation stay steady, make good decisions, and keep doing meaningful work during a time of growth.

What difference will you make?

TES is entering an exciting new phase. After more than 15 years of building a strong community organisation, we are now approaching a period of rapid development, with significant plans for our existing work, the redevelopment of the Stables and the potential development of a community farm.

This growth brings enormous opportunity, but it also brings greater financial complexity and responsibility. A new Treasurer will therefore play a particularly important role in helping TES move confidently into its next chapter.

The Treasurer will provide the Board with clear financial oversight, good judgement and confidence as the organisation grows. They will help trustees understand not just where our money is going, but what our finances are telling us about the health, sustainability and future direction of the organisation.

As TES takes on larger projects, new funding streams, increased staffing and potentially significant capital expenditure, the Treasurer will help us make sure that our ambitions are matched by sound financial planning. They will help us understand risk, assess opportunities and make informed decisions about when to invest, when to grow and when to consolidate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Importantly, this isn't about becoming overly cautious or putting the brakes on development. It is about giving TES the financial foundations that allow us to be ambitious with confidence.

The Treasurer will also help strengthen the relationship between the Board, staff team, funders and other stakeholders by ensuring that financial information is accessible, transparent and meaningful. They will provide constructive challenge where necessary while helping the organisation find solutions to financial and operational challenges.

For the right person, this is therefore an opportunity to do much more than fulfil a traditional trustee role. They will have a genuine influence on the development of an organisation at a pivotal moment in its history.

TES already has a strong community, an established track record and a clear vision. We now need the governance and financial capacity to match that potential.

A good Treasurer will help us grow without losing what makes us special, take calculated risks without losing control, and turn our ambitions into sustainable reality.

It is an exciting time to join TES, and the Treasurer will be at the heart of making the next stage possible.

Hybrid

What will you be doing?

At its heart, this role is about helping the board feel confident about money.

That means

  • Keeping an eye on how things are going financially
  • Helping shape budgets and longer-term plans
  • Making sure information is clear and understandable
  • Flagging anything that needs attention early

You won’t be doing the day-to-day bookkeeping. Staff and our accountants handle that. Your role is more about oversight and common sense than detail-heavy finance work.

There are a few formal bits too

  • Supporting annual accounts and reporting (with our accountants)
  • Making sure we’re meeting our responsibilities as a charity
  • Keeping an eye on things like reserves and financial risk
  • Being a trustee

As Treasurer, you’re also one of our trustees. That means being part of the group that steers the organisation as a whole.

In practice, that looks like

  • Turning up, joining in, and sharing your perspective
  • Helping us make good, grounded decisions
  • Keeping the organisation true to its purpose

Who this might suit

You don’t need to be a finance professional, but you do need to be comfortable with numbers and able to spot what matters.
