Job Overview
We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our maternity teams as an advisor for Treating Tobacco Dependence.
Working at St Michael's Hospital, you will have an opportunity to support the implementation of the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Treating Tobacco Dependency (TTD) programme to help reduce smoking in pregnancy rates and improve health outcomes.
This role is suitable for individuals currently working in a clinical or non-clinical setting.
Main Duties of the Job
Within This Role, You Will
- Contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting pregnant service users, their significant others and families to stop smoking. It focuses on engaging with people in communities and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals.
- Provide intermediate targeted smoking cessation support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring and Nicotine Replacement Therapy, along with administration of the smokefree pregnancy data collection and collation.
- Work and liaise closely with local stop smoking services as well as local Public Health teams. The postholder is responsible for acting as a smoke free champion promoting the smoke free message through their day to day work and seeking out opportunities to develop and implement stop smoking services in a range of health and community settings.

Main Duties And Responsibilities Of The Post
- To plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines. This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues.
- Identify and approach service users who are eligible for tobacco dependence conversations and treatment in a variety of different settings. These may be in a clinical area, virtually or in a persons home. Follow service users through their engagement with the service to the location of their care provision in order for integrated care.
- Develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.
- Provide general health, lifestyle advice and support to people using the service e.g. healthy eating, physical activity, stress management. This may include individual and group-based interventions, signposting and referring to other health, community, and voluntary services.
- Participate in educating pregnant service users, their significant others and families about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those service users, significant others and families wanting to quit. Promote smoke free homes and support and advise service users, significant others and families about passive smoking.
- Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum.
- Engage with the targeted Smoking Cessation intervention, keeping accurate records and enable good data collection. Maintain accurate up to date and comprehensive records at all times.
- Ensure that the relevant equipment is provided and maintained on an agreed schedule.
- Report any failings of equipment or other environmental factors to the Clinical Lead.
- Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales self-referrals from the individuals, and those from colleagues/other services.
- To be involved in the monitoring and evaluation of patient/client feedback, offering recommendations as part of the team to improve services.
- Be aware of how to report incidents, concerns or complaints and escalate any concerns or complexities to the Clinical Lead
Monitoring And Administrative Tasks
- To contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the service, including the completion of the minimum data set requirement. This will include following up quitters who do not attend for planned support.
- Maintain accurate patient and staff records in line with Trust guidelines.
- Ensure administrative duties are carried out efficiently and effectively in order to meet the needs of the service.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE level English and Mathematics or equivalent.
- NVQ level 3/4 or equivalent health related studies OR substantial successful experience delivering stop smoking interventions/support
Desirable criteria
- Smoking cessation Advisor Intermediate level qualification (or willingness to undertake)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice to patients or members of the public.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience of providing help, support and/or counselling on either a one-to-one basis or as part of a group setting.
- A record of working with pregnant service users.

Skills
Essential criteria
- A good level of understanding of evidence-based practice in relation to smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and benefits to quitting
- An understanding of human behaviour in relation to making healthy lifestyle changes and decisions
- The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with professionals/individuals from a variety of different professional background
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and listening skills.
- A good standard of computer skills.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload and coordinate own schedule without direct supervision.
- Accurate and sufficient record keeping
Desirable criteria
- Smoking cessation NCSCT trained.
- Experience of using Quit Manager or another database/electronic clinical record system.
