About the Role
bp's Advanced Electrification Testing (AET) team is part of the Applied Sciences & Technology division within bp Technology. The team plays a critical role in advancing innovation across electric vehicles, battery technologies, data centres, and tribology, helping to shape the future of energy and mobility.
We are looking for an Engineering Technician to join our Operations Team and support the world-renowned Castrol Tribology Centre of Excellence. This innovative facility provides modern testing capabilities that help drive the development and performance of Castrol's lubrication products, ensuring we stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market.
This is a great opportunity for a hands-on engineering professional who enjoys laboratory testing, problem-solving, equipment development, and working with advanced technologies. You will play a key role in operating and maintaining specialist test facilities, supporting research projects, and helping develop new testing methodologies.
What You'll Be Doing
As an Engineering Technician, you will:
- Schedule, set up, and perform tribological testing using a range of specialist laboratory instruments.
- Operate testing programmes independently, ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and to agreed timelines.
- Analyse test results and prepare technical reports for internal customers.
- Collaborate closely with tribologists, scientists, and technologists to support ongoing research and product development activities.
- Assist in the design, build, installation, commissioning, and improvement of laboratory equipment and test rigs.
- Support the development of new measurement techniques and testing methodologies.
- Perform routine equipment inspections, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
- Contribute to laboratory safety processes, including Risk Assessments, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Management of Change (MOC) documentation.
- Maintain compliance with all Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) standards.
- Champion a collaborative and proactive safety culture within the team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
