An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated team players to join our well-established General Surgery Service at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, welcoming applications for a Trust Doctor ST1/2 level to join the team.
About the Trust
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust consists of a 600-bedded large district General Hospital, which provides its services on the Countess of Chester Health Park, and a 64-bedded Intermediate Care Service at Ellesmere Port Hospital. The Trust employs over 5,000 staff and provides a range of medical services to more than 445,000 patients per year from areas covering Western Cheshire, Ellesmere Port, Neston, and North Wales.
The hospital is situated in a beautiful location on the outskirts of the historic Roman City of Chester. We are within easy access of Manchester Airport, North Wales, and the Lake District. The Trust is committed to continued professional development and to a culture of ongoing service improvement.
Role Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in an on-call rota and must hold full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.

The post holder will be responsible to the appropriate consultants for admitting cases, the attendance at daily ward rounds, the arrangement of patient investigations as part of the pre and post-operative care of circa General Surgery patients. The role will require you to liaise with the wider hospital teams and Surgical clinical team to support ward-based patient care and facilitate discharges. The role also requires you to participate in operative surgery; with the extent of your involvement being commensurate with your experience and ability.
There is also an expectation that the post-holder will contribute to departmental audit and research with consultant supervision.
Training and Development
This post is not recognised for training purposes; however, the Trust will ensure teaching to a high standard to assist the successful applicant in progressing further.
Locations and Services
The Trust’s services are provided from three locations:
- The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
- Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate, and outpatient facility.
- Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
