Join Waterwatch UK as a Trustee
Waterwatch UK is looking for a new Trustee to join our Board and work alongside our four existing Trustees as we enter the next stage of our development. Over the past year, Waterwatch UK has established itself as a charity focused on strengthening public participation, transparency and accountability within the water sector. We are now looking for an additional Trustee who can bring their experience, judgement and perspective to our Board as we build on this foundation and shape our next phase.
About Waterwatch UK
Waterwatch UK exists to help communities have a stronger voice in decisions about water. We bring people, organisations and decision makers together to improve public participation, strengthen accountability and create better connections between communities and the organisations responsible for our water environment. Over our first year as a charity, we have developed our approach through practical community engagement, partnerships and Water Summits, alongside wider work exploring how communities can play a more meaningful role in water governance. We are now moving into an important period of development as we strengthen our strategy, partnerships, funding and organisational foundations.
The role
As a Trustee, you will share responsibility with the rest of the Board for the governance and strategic direction of Waterwatch UK. You will work alongside four other Trustees and our Founder to help ensure the charity remains focused on its purpose, uses its resources responsibly and develops in a sustainable way.

Trustees are expected to:
- Contribute to the strategic direction of Waterwatch UK
- Ensure the charity remains focused on its charitable purpose and public benefit
- Provide constructive challenge, support and independent judgement
- Help oversee finances, risk, governance and organisational sustainability
- Contribute to Board discussions and decisions
- Act as an ambassador for Waterwatch UK where appropriate
- Support the development of partnerships, funding and opportunities where your experience or networks can help
- Ensure the charity complies with its legal and regulatory responsibilities
Who we are looking for
You do not need to have been a Trustee before. We are interested in people who share our commitment to greater public participation and accountability and who can bring useful experience, insight or networks to the Board. We would particularly welcome experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Charity governance
- Finance or financial oversight
- Fundraising and income generation
- Community engagement and participation
- Communications and public affairs
- Water, environment or environmental policy
- Partnerships and stakeholder engagement
- Organisational development and strategy

We also welcome people whose experience comes from outside the charity or environmental sectors. The most important qualities are sound judgement, curiosity, willingness to contribute and a commitment to Waterwatch UK’s purpose.
Commitment
The role is voluntary. Trustees will normally attend quarterly Board meetings and contribute to discussions and decisions between meetings where required. We recognise that Trustees have other professional and personal commitments and aim to keep the role manageable and focused. Reasonable expenses can be reimbursed in line with our expenses policy.
What you will be joining
You will be joining Waterwatch UK at an important point in its development. Our first year as a charity has allowed us to test ideas, build relationships and understand where Waterwatch UK can make the greatest contribution. The next stage is about turning that learning into a strong and sustainable organisation. As our fifth Trustee, you will have an opportunity to help shape that next phase rather than simply oversee an established organisation.
