Trustee and Treasurer
We’re seeking a Trustee and Treasurer with senior finance or accountancy experience to strengthen our financial oversight and help a Black British heritage charity build robust systems for its next stage of development.
What difference will you make?
The Treasurer will give FHALMA greater financial confidence and resilience at an important stage of growth. By helping the Board plan realistically, manage risk and demonstrate accountability, they will strengthen funder and donor confidence and enable informed decisions about new projects, partnerships and commercial opportunities. Their contribution will help FHALMA attract and manage investment responsibly, turning ambitious ideas into sustainable arts, archive, education and community programmes that widen access to Black British history and support intergenerational learning.
What are we looking for?
The most important requirements are substantial senior finance or accountancy experience, sound judgement and the ability to explain financial information clearly to people without a finance background.
Ideally, you will hold a qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA, although we will also consider candidates with equivalent senior-level experience.
You should be able to
- Provide clear, independent and proportionate financial oversight.
- Interpret budgets, forecasts, cash flow and management accounts.
- Identify financial risks and support realistic planning.
- Chair a small Finance Committee and work collaboratively with the bookkeeper, Chief Executive and fellow trustees.
- Contribute financial insight to funding bids, project budgets, funder reporting and the review of commercial opportunities.

Experience of charity finance, restricted funds, grant-funded projects, Gift Aid, annual accounts or independent examination would be valuable. Experience of fundraising or commercial development would also be welcome, but the Treasurer will work as part of a wider group and will not be expected to act as FHALMA’s sole fundraiser or undertake day-to-day bookkeeping.
An understanding of and genuine interest in Black British heritage and history, publishing and activism are important. Candidates should share FHALMA’s commitment to social justice and intergenerational learning.
We welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and particularly value lived experience and cultural understanding of the histories and communities represented in the Huntley Archives, including the African and Caribbean diaspora.

What will you be doing?
FHALMA currently has a small Board comprising an Acting Chair and three trustees, working alongside a freelance Chief Executive, a bookkeeper and volunteers. We are strengthening the Board as we develop new heritage, education and community projects, build partnerships and pursue new funding and commercial opportunities.

Our immediate challenge is to establish stronger financial systems, reporting and oversight while ensuring that our plans for growth are realistic and sustainable. The new Treasurer will play a central leadership role in this work.
The Treasurer will
- Chair FHALMA’s Finance Committee, working closely with the bookkeeper and Chief Executive.
- Set the Committee’s priorities, review financial reports and ensure that agreed actions and recommendations are presented clearly to the Board.
- Lead Board oversight of budgets, cash flow, reserves, restricted funds, financial controls and project expenditure.
- Support annual accounts, independent examination, regulatory reporting and compliance with Charity Commission, HMRC and Gift Aid requirements.
- Provide financial input into project budgets, funding applications and reports to funders and donors.
- Be a key member of FHALMA’s Fundraising and Commercial Opportunities Strategy and Review Group.
- Help assess the financial viability, risks and potential returns of fundraising plans, partnerships and commercial opportunities.
- Support the development of a more diverse and sustainable income base for FHALMA’s future work.
