Who we are
Pharmacology helps us understand how medicines work, develop new treatments and improve the use of those already available. The British Pharmacological Society supports the people behind this work. Through our scientific journals, meetings and education, we help members share knowledge and improve healthcare. Our trading subsidiary, BPS Assessment, provides online learning and assessment that support safe prescribing.
Our strategy, ‘Towards 100 Years’, sets out how we will advance pharmacology and strengthen our community ahead of our centenary in 2031. Delivering it means developing services that meet real needs and generating income to sustain our charitable work.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About the role
Our Business Trustee will help Council make informed decisions about commercial opportunities and the resources needed to pursue them. Publishing remains an important income source, alongside opportunities to develop educational products, events and partnerships.
You will work with fellow trustees and our executive colleagues to examine proposals, assess risk and consider how investment can benefit the Society and its members. Your contribution will help us balance financial sustainability with the accessibility and quality of our activities.
You will also serve on the BPS Assessment Board, providing an important connection with Council as the business develops its services and international reach. This brings scope to contribute across both charity governance and a business supporting prescribing education.

What we are looking for
You will bring previous trustee or comparable board experience, alongside senior commercial responsibility and sound financial judgement. We welcome experience from different sectors, including business development, education and technology.
An understanding of online assessment or educational products will help you contribute to BPS Assessment’s development. You will be able to consider opportunities from a commercial perspective while keeping the Society’s charitable objectives central to your advice. We value people who listen to different perspectives, explain their reasoning and question proposals constructively. You will need time to contribute across Council and the BPS Assessment Board, with flexibility around wider committee involvement.
If you would like to use your experience to support the science behind better medicines, we would welcome a conversation about the role and its commitments.
