Asylum Aid is recruiting a Finance Trustee to join our Board, helping oversee financial governance, support strategic decision-making and strengthen the long-term sustainability of our specialist legal services for people seeking asylum and protection in the UK.
What difference will you make?
The Finance Trustee will help Asylum Aid remain financially sustainable and make confident, well-informed decisions about resources, risk and future growth.
- Their oversight will support our ability to provide expert legal representation to people seeking protection, while also strengthening our wider work on training, strategic litigation, policy and systemic change.
- By helping ensure strong financial planning and governance, they will play an important role in protecting Asylum Aid’s long-term stability and enabling us to reach more people who need safety, fair treatment and access to justice.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a qualified accountant and senior financial expert (CCAB qualified) with strong experience of financial leadership. This could include experience as a Finance Director in the private, public or voluntary sector, or as a partner in an audit or accountancy firm.
Key experience should include
- Treasury, risk and reserves management
- Audit and corporate governance
- Financial planning and oversight
- Experience working at Board level, ideally in a charity, public sector or commercial organisation

The Trustee should be able to think strategically, exercise sound independent judgement and work constructively as part of a small Board.
We are also looking for someone who is strongly committed to Asylum Aid’s vision and values, equality, diversity and inclusion, anti-racist practice, and shifting power towards people with lived experience.
We particularly welcome applications from people from backgrounds currently underrepresented in charity governance, including people of colour, disabled people, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, refugees, stateless people and others with lived experience of forced migration or trauma.

What will you be doing?
We are seeking a Finance Trustee to join the Asylum Aid Board and provide particular oversight of the charity’s financial health, sustainability and fundraising.
Our Board provides strategic oversight of Asylum Aid and includes Board Advisors with lived experience, helping to ensure that the voices and perspectives of people directly affected by the asylum system inform our governance. The Board is supported by a Finance and Fundraising Committee and a People and Governance Committee, both of which meet quarterly.
This is an important time to join Asylum Aid. We are working to increase the number of people in need of protection in the UK who obtain safety and are treated fairly and with dignity. Our current strategy focuses on driving high-quality support, strengthening collaboration, challenging harmful systems, transforming access to legal support and delivering best practice for our team and supporters. Delivering these ambitions in a challenging and evolving environment requires strong financial oversight and careful long-term planning.

The new Trustee will work closely with the Executive Director, Director of Finance and Governance and fellow trustees to ensure the Board has clear and accurate financial information and that Asylum Aid operates with robust financial controls. They will also be a member of the Finance and Fundraising Committee, which meets online between quarterly Board meetings.
Specific responsibilities will include overseeing the financial model underpinning our strategy; reviewing and recommending annual budgets; reviewing management accounts, forecasts and financial policies; overseeing financial risk, reserves and audit arrangements; and managing the relationship with external auditors. The Trustee will also contribute to oversight of our fundraising and supporter engagement strategy and provide guidance and support to the Director of Finance and Governance and Group Director of Fundraising.
This role offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution to Asylum Aid’s long-term sustainability, helping ensure that we can continue to provide specialist legal representation, challenge barriers to protection and justice, and support people navigating some of the most complex parts of the UK asylum system.
