We’re seeking new trustees with an interest in recreation and Active Travel to help oversee our work supporting the Trans Pennine Trail Project.
What difference will you make?
The key responsibility of Trustees is to have oversight of our activities which can entail substantial sums of money passing through our accounts and making sure our projects reach a successful conclusion.
What are we looking for?
Applicants should work well in teams and have an interest in walking, cycling and/or horse riding, environmental management and sustainable tourism. They should have at least three years experience either of volunteering with a charity or serving on the Board of one. This should include:
- Participating in meetings online and in person
- Reviewing accounts and assessing the merits of small projects that we are being asked to fund
- Taking part in fundraising events, such as running stalls at country shows
- Ensuring that the charity is run in accordance with the rules set out in the Constitution
- Participating in planning events and workshops
- Advising volunteers and partner organisations

The Friends of the TPT is a small group who help to look after the Trans Pennine Trail.

Our main focus is to seek funding for projects that will improve the trail. There are many sources of funding that local Authorities cannot apply for, but we can and then we manage the money received ensuring that it is spent wisely and the project concludes successfully. Examples of projects we have undertaken are the Godley Turntable, taking a derelict & disused railway turntable site and turning it into a pleasant visitor attraction and picnic site just off the Trail, accessibility improvements at Torside in Longdendale and surfacing improvements on the Burn Airfield site near Selby along with an information board explaining the significance of the airfield in World Two.
So the main responsibility of the Trustees is to maintain oversight of these projects. We have four board meetings a year plus our AGM, which we normally have just before the Board meeting in the Autumn. Most of our meetings take place online using Microsoft Teams but we do have a face-to-face meeting a year, usually in Leeds. We keep in touch with each other via a Google email group. Trustees do have to be members of the Friends.
There are many smaller initiatives that Trustees take on across the trail but this very much depends on their availability and enthusiasm. Currently all our Officer roles are filled so there is no need to take on admin roles such as Membership Secretary although they may come up in the future.

We are very lucky to have the resources of the TPT Office available to us, currently consisting of two full-time roles (Mandy and Hannah) and a Technical Assistant (Robert)
Additionally there is the TPT Exec which brings together representatives of the 27 local authorities who have joint responsibility for the Trail and we work closely with Sustrans who manage TPT Volunteer Groups. Our joint vision is that the Trail should be a shining exemplar of Active Travel routes across the North of England - we appreciate that it sometimes falls short of that and are constantly working to improve it.
