We’re seeking a Trustee with senior legal, charity regulatory or governance experience to strengthen decision-making, compliance and legal-risk management at a Black British heritage charity preparing for growth.
What difference will you make?
By helping FHALMA develop clear guidance on copyright, licensing, publishing rights and the appropriate use of archival material, the Legal and Governance Trustee will enable us to protect and make ambitious use of the Huntley Archives. Their advice will help us work confidently with commercial, cultural and educational partners, maximise the archives’ cultural and income-generating potential, and guide researchers, publishers and creators in using the material responsibly. This will support wider engagement with Black British history, publishing, activism and social justice while safeguarding the Huntleys’ legacy for future generations.
What are we looking for?
You may be a solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, or have equivalent senior experience. We welcome practising, non-practising and retired legal professionals.
You should have
- An understanding of trustee responsibilities and effective charity governance.
- Experience of reviewing contracts, policies, governing documents or regulatory requirements.
- The ability to identify and explain legal and governance risks clearly.
- Sound judgement, integrity, independence and attention to detail.
- The confidence to offer constructive challenge while working collaboratively.
- A commitment to confidentiality and responsible information management.

Experience of charity law, contracts and partnerships, intellectual property, data protection, safeguarding or organisational development would be particularly valuable.
An understanding of and genuine interest in Black British heritage and history, publishing and activism are particularly important. Candidates should share FHALMA’s commitment to social justice and intergenerational learning and be willing to help develop the organisation’s profile, partnerships and potential to raise funds for its projects.
We welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and particularly value lived experience, cultural understanding and commitment to the histories and communities represented in the Huntley Archives, including the African and Caribbean diaspora.

What will you be doing?
FHALMA currently has a small Board comprising an Acting Chair and three trustees, working alongside a freelance Chief Executive and volunteers. We are strengthening the Board as we develop new projects, partnerships, funding applications and ways of working.

The Legal and Governance Trustee will provide strategic support to the Chair and Board, helping FHALMA maintain proportionate governance arrangements and identify and manage legal risk.
The Trustee will
- Advise on compliance with FHALMA’s governing document, charity law and Charity Commission requirements.
- Help review governance arrangements, delegated authority, conflicts of interest and decision-making records.
- Support the development and review of key policies, including safeguarding, complaints, volunteering, data protection, equality and inclusion, and risk.
- Identify legal and governance issues arising from projects, partnerships, funding and organisational change.
- Provide strategic input on contracts, memoranda of understanding, grants and licences.
- Advise on intellectual property, copyright, licensing and archival rights.
- Help the Board understand its responsibilities relating to data protection, confidentiality, safeguarding and serious incidents.
- Identify when independent or specialist external legal advice is required.
This is a strategic governance role for example, the Trustee will help FHALMA develop its projects and partnerships on a sound legal and governance footing.
