Trustee (Operations & IT) - volunteer role
Help shape the future of Citizens Advice Harlow
Citizens Advice Harlow is a respected local charity providing independent advice and support to a growing community of more than 98,000 residents. Supported by 27 staff and 20 volunteers, we are committed to improving our services and finding innovative ways to meet increasing demand.
We are seeking a trustee with a strong operations and IT background to join our board. This is an exciting opportunity to use your expertise to help us improve efficiency, embrace technology and AI, and ultimately enable us to support more people across our community.
You will provide strategic oversight of our operational systems, digital infrastructure, and use of technology, helping the organisation identify smarter ways of working and enhancing the client journey.
What you'll do
As a trustee, you'll work alongside fellow board members to:
- Contribute to the strategic direction and governance of Citizens Advice Harlow.
- Monitor organisational and financial performance.
- Help ensure services continue to meet the needs of the local community.
- Support effective planning for staff and volunteer recruitment and retention.
- Drive continuous improvement across the organisation.
- Provide oversight and guidance on IT infrastructure, systems, and digital transformation.
- Explore opportunities to use AI and technology to streamline repetitive tasks, increase efficiency, and improve client outcomes.

- Experience in operations, IT, digital transformation, or technology leadership.

- Strong communication and analytical skills.
- The ability to think strategically and exercise independent judgement.
- A commitment to the values and aims of Citizens Advice.
Previous trustee experience is welcome but not essential.

Time commitment
The role typically requires around half a day per month, including:
- Attendance at a minimum of four board meetings each year.
- Participation in relevant subcommittees and project groups where appropriate.
- Reading meeting papers and contributing to strategic discussions.
Board meetings are usually held during the day, with occasional evening meetings.
