I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a committed and organised individual who is passionate about supporting adults with learning disabilities and helping a local charity thrive through strong governance and effective board working.

The most important qualities are excellent organisational skills, reliability and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally. You will be comfortable coordinating agendas, managing documents, recording accurate minutes and ensuring actions are followed through. You should enjoy working collaboratively and be able to build positive relationships with fellow trustees while contributing to a supportive and constructive board culture.

We are looking for someone who can think strategically and contribute thoughtfully to discussions about the charity's future. An understanding of good governance and the importance of accountability, transparency and effective decision-making will be valuable in helping the board fulfil its responsibilities.

A commitment to inclusion and improving opportunities for adults with learning disabilities is essential. We would particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of learning disability, whether personally or through their role as a family member, carer or advocate, as these perspectives help strengthen our board and inform our decision-making.

Our board is made up of committed volunteers who share a passion for improving opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. We work collaboratively, bringing a range of professional backgrounds and lived experiences to help shape the charity's strategic direction. As a relatively small charity, every trustee has the opportunity to make a visible contribution and influence decisions that directly benefit the people we support.

As Secretary Trustee, you will take the lead on coordinating the board's governance processes. You will work closely with the Chair to prepare agendas for our bi-monthly board meetings, circulate papers in advance, record accurate minutes and ensure actions are tracked and followed up. You will also help maintain key governance documents, policies and records, supporting the charity to meet its legal and regulatory responsibilities.

This is more than an administrative role. You will be an active member of the board, contributing to strategic discussions, helping the board make informed decisions and supporting the charity as it continues to grow and develop. Depending on your interests, there will also be opportunities to contribute to wider organisational projects and initiatives.

One of our key priorities is ensuring the charity remains sustainable while continuing to provide high-quality, inclusive social opportunities that reduce isolation, build confidence and promote independence for adults with learning disabilities. Strong governance is essential to achieving this, and the Secretary Trustee plays a central role in helping the board work effectively together.

Board meetings take place approximately every six weeks in Bath, with complete flexibility to undertake preparation and administration remotely. We value open discussion, mutual support and collaborative decision-making, and we are proud of the welcoming culture we have created within our board.

This is an opportunity to use your organisational skills to make a genuine difference. Your work will help ensure that meetings are productive, decisions are well documented and the board can focus on guiding the charity towards a successful and sustainable future. By joining us, you will help shape the future of a valued local charity while enabling adults with learning disabilities to enjoy friendships, social connections and opportunities to participate fully in their community.
