Help shape the future of Citizens Advice Warrington. We’re looking for 2–3 new Trustees, particularly with skills in HR & people, data & analysis or marketing & communications. Bring your experience, ideas and perspective to help us make a real difference in our community.
What difference will you make?
Joining our Board as a Trustee is an opportunity to make a real difference to both Citizens Advice Warrington and the people and communities we serve.
Every year, thousands of local people turn to us for help, often when they are facing difficult or complex circumstances. The decisions our Board makes help ensure that our staff and volunteers have a strong, sustainable organisation behind them and can continue providing free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to people who need it.
Our new Trustees will bring additional skills, experience and perspectives to our Board, helping us make better-informed decisions and strengthening our ability to plan for the future.
In particular, additional expertise in HR and people, data and analysis, and marketing and communications will help us develop as an organisation. It will strengthen how we support and develop our people, how we use evidence to understand our performance and impact, and how effectively we communicate the difference Citizens Advice Warrington makes.
However, your impact will go much wider than your own professional expertise. As a Trustee, you will help us consider the bigger picture – challenging our thinking, asking questions, identifying opportunities and risks, and helping ensure our resources are used effectively.
Good governance ultimately enables good services. By helping Citizens Advice Warrington remain well governed, financially sustainable and focused on the needs of our community, our Trustees indirectly contribute to every person who comes through our doors, phones us, accesses our services online or meets one of our advisers in the community.
You will also help us look beyond individual cases. The evidence we gather through our advice work helps us identify the problems affecting people across Warrington and provides a powerful basis for influencing change.
This is therefore an opportunity to use your skills and experience not just to support a charity, but to help shape an organisation that gives people a voice, tackles disadvantage and helps thousands of people across Warrington find a way forward.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for 2–3 people who share our commitment to the work of Citizens Advice Warrington and want to use their skills, experience and perspective to help us make a difference in our community.
You do not need previous Trustee experience. We will provide induction, training and support, and we are just as interested in your approach, values and willingness to contribute as we are in previous Board experience.

Following a review of the skills currently represented on our Board, we are particularly looking for people with experience in one or more of the following areas:
HR and people – including organisational development, employee engagement, workforce planning, culture or employment practice.
Data and analysis – helping us make better use of information to understand our performance, demonstrate our impact and support good strategic decision-making.
Marketing and communications – helping us think strategically about our profile, communications, engagement and how we tell the story of the difference we make.
These are our priority areas, but we don't expect you to be the Board's operational HR adviser, data analyst or marketing officer. You will be a Trustee first and foremost, sharing collective responsibility with the rest of the Board for the governance and strategic direction of the charity.
The Charity Commission describes six main duties of Trustees, including ensuring a charity delivers its purposes for the public benefit, complies with its governing document and the law, acts in its best interests, manages resources responsibly, acts with reasonable care and skill, and remains accountable. We therefore need Trustees who are prepared to take these responsibilities seriously and contribute actively to Board decision-making.
We are looking for people who can think strategically, exercise independent judgement, ask good questions and offer constructive challenge, while working collaboratively and maintaining a positive relationship with fellow Trustees and our leadership team.
You should be willing to prepare for and participate in meetings, listen to different viewpoints and use your own knowledge and experience to help the Board reach well-informed collective decisions.
We also value lived experience and different perspectives. You may have personal experience of some of the issues affecting the people we support, experience of Warrington and its communities, or simply bring a perspective that is currently less represented around our Board table.
The Charity Commission highlights that Boards with a good mix of skills, backgrounds and perspectives are better able to consider different viewpoints, challenge groupthink and remain connected to their beneficiaries.
Above all, we are looking for people who are curious, thoughtful, collaborative and committed to helping Citizens Advice Warrington remain strong, sustainable and responsive to our community.

What will you be doing?
Our Board is currently made up of Trustees with a broad range of professional and life experience. We have a valuable mix of long-serving Trustees, who bring significant organisational knowledge and continuity, alongside newer Trustees who bring fresh perspectives and different ways of thinking.
We are now looking to appoint 2–3 new Trustees to further strengthen and diversify the skills and experience around our Board table. In particular, we would love to hear from people with experience in HR and people, data and analysis, or marketing and communications.
This is an important time to join Citizens Advice Warrington. Demand for advice remains high, the problems people bring to us are increasingly complex, and like many charities we are operating in a challenging financial environment. At the same time, there are real opportunities to develop how we deliver our services, make better use of data and technology, strengthen partnerships and ensure that our voice and impact are understood across Warrington.
Our new Trustees will help us think strategically about these opportunities and challenges. You will contribute to the full range of Board discussions and decisions, including our strategy, finances, performance, risk, people and the quality and impact of our services.
We are recruiting Trustees first and foremost. We don't expect you to become the Board's operational HR adviser, data analyst or marketing officer. Instead, we want you to bring your particular knowledge and experience to help the Board ask the right questions, provide constructive challenge and make well-informed decisions.
Trustees attend our Board meetings, usually six times a year, read papers in advance and take an active part in discussions and decision-making. There may also be opportunities to contribute to specific projects, working groups or subcommittees depending on your interests, skills and the needs of the charity.
You will work alongside fellow Trustees and our Chief Officer and leadership team, providing both support and constructive challenge while maintaining the important distinction between governance and day-to-day management.
Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to help shape the future of an organisation that supports thousands of local people every year. Your contribution around the Board table will help ensure Citizens Advice Warrington remains sustainable, responsive and able to provide high-quality advice to the people who need us.
