We are recruiting three trustees
We are recruiting three trustees, with focus respectively in advocacy & research, strategic communications, and philanthropic & corporate giving, in order to help strengthen our humanitarian and human rights efforts and develop our governance.
What difference will you make?
All three trustees will attend our monthly board meeting (last Friday of the month, roughly two hours) and contribute some advisory time outside of that, a total commitment of around five hours a month. You will be joining a board that works in close partnership with the CEO and takes a hands-on interest in the practical detail of our programmes, not just high-level sign-off. This is a chance to shape how a growing, multi-country humanitarian organisation approaches some of its most pressing challenges documenting and responding to human rights abuses against displaced people, communicating that work honestly and compellingly, and building the funding base that sustains it.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for three trustees, each bringing distinct expertise, alongside a shared commitment to our mission and values. Across all three roles, we're looking for board, governance or senior leadership experience, ideally within an NGO or mission-driven organisation, along with a relevant understanding of UK charity trustee responsibilities. Strong strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills are important, as is the ability to translate complex or specialist knowledge into clear, practical advice for fellow trustees who are not specialists in your area.
We particularly encourage applications from people with lived experience of displacement, people with experience representing minority or diversity interests in governance spaces, and people with experience in international human rights advocacy, safeguarding policy or risk management in humanitarian contexts.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What will you be doing?
Collective Aid's governing board currently has five trustees working closely with our CEO to oversee a coalition of humanitarian programmes across Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Greece. We're now recruiting three additional trustees to strengthen specific areas of the board's work as the organisation grows.
The first role sits alongside our advocacy and research team
Our human rights investigations cover deaths, disappearances, detentions and deportations affecting displaced people, and this trustee will guide the frameworks behind that work, help identify research partnerships, and make sure our approach to systemic change is rigorous and well-evidenced.
The second role supports our communications function
We're building out a growing campaigns programme, and this trustee will advise on storytelling, campaign strategy and crisis communications, helping us tell the story of our work to funders, supporters and the wider public with consistency and impact.
The third role is focused on philanthropic and corporate giving
As our fundraising department expands, this trustee will help set the strategic direction for donor development, open doors to prospective funders, and provide oversight of our financial plans and budgets as we grow.
