Disability Equals Ability is a small charity. We are looking for new trustees to join our board who are keen to apply their transferable skills to effect change successfully
What difference will you make?
Our Trustees play a vital role in shaping the future of Disability Equals Ability and ensuring that we remain a strong, sustainable and effective organisation that is accountable to the Disabled people and communities we seek to support.
By joining our Board, you will bring your skills, professional expertise and lived experience to help strengthen our governance, inform our strategic direction and support the charity as it continues to grow.
We are particularly seeking Trustees who can help us diversify our income, strengthen fundraising and partnerships, develop our policy and influencing work, improve our digital capabilities, and ensure that we have robust systems for legal compliance, people management, audit and risk.
Your contribution will help us make informed decisions, develop sustainable programmes and partnerships, and increase our ability to challenge the barriers and inequalities experienced by Disabled people.
Just as importantly, our Trustees will help ensure that lived experience remains at the heart of our decision-making. We want our Board to reflect a diversity of perspectives and to ensure that the voices of Disabled people, including those from marginalised and under-represented communities, influence our priorities and future direction.
Ultimately, your contribution as a Trustee will help Disability Equals Ability become stronger, more sustainable and better equipped to create meaningful and lasting change for Disabled people and the communities we work alongside.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for committed, thoughtful and collaborative people who share Disability Equals Ability’s commitment to disability equality, inclusion, social justice and the Social Model of Disability.
Our ideal Trustees will be able to think strategically, contribute constructively to Board discussions, ask appropriate and sometimes challenging questions, and work collaboratively with fellow Trustees, staff and volunteers. They should have sound judgement, integrity and a willingness to take collective responsibility for the effective governance and future development of the charity.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Lived experience is particularly important to us. We want to strengthen the diversity of voices represented within our governance and particularly welcome applications from Disabled people and people with lived experience of the barriers, inequalities and discrimination that Disabled people can face.
We are keen to hear from people with a wide range of lived experiences, including people with learning disabilities or learning difficulties, neurodivergent people, Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, people with visual or physical impairments, people with mental health conditions and people living with long-term health conditions.
We also particularly welcome applications from people from Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic communities, different socio-economic backgrounds and others whose perspectives have historically been under-represented within charity leadership.
Above all, we are looking for people who believe in our mission, respect the voices and autonomy of Disabled people, and are prepared to use their skills, experience and influence to help Disability Equals Ability achieve meaningful and lasting change.

What will you be doing?
Join Our Board of Trustees
This is an opportunity to bring your skills, experience and commitment to an organisation rooted in lived experience, focused on rights, equality and justice, and determined to create lasting change for Disabled people.
At Disability Equals Ability, we take a Disability Justice and Social Model approach to our work. We recognise that people are disabled by barriers within society, rather than by their impairments alone. We also recognise that Disabled people’s experiences can be shaped by multiple and intersecting forms of inequality and discrimination, including racism, poverty, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and other forms of exclusion.
