About the Role

We are seeking new trustees who are motivated to make a meaningful difference by working with us to improve the health of underserved communities at our community health organisation. Our goal is for everyone in our community to achieve health and wellbeing and focus on what matters to them.

As a trustee, you will actively contribute towards helping us achieve our vision that everyone in our vibrant community can be healthy by focusing on what matters to them, bringing people together and providing the support, opportunities and connections that help them improve their health and wellbeing and achieve lasting positive change. You will also share our values and priorities:

You can help us to continue developing our vision and mission. Your contribution of time and energy will support the board and senior leadership team to deliver on this activity, in line with its objectives. Specific tasks that we are looking for trustees to fulfill include:

  • Provide strategic leadership to support sustainable growth.
  • Strengthen governance, compliance, and organisational effectiveness.
  • Expand networks, partnerships, and funding opportunities.
  • Act as an advocate for the importance of the health and wellbeing work of DWB.

What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for people who have qualities including:

  • Ability to work in an inclusive manner, thinking creatively and strategically, exercising objectivity, honesty, fairness, trustworthiness, integrity, respect, wisdom, discretion and sound, independent judgement.
  • A commitment to act solely in the best interests of DWB as a whole, without sole regard to personal interest or benefit.
  • Leading with inclusion, humility, warmth, transparent communication, knowledge and understanding, competence.
  • Readiness to take and be accountable for collective decisions and stand by the decisions made.
  • Understand the importance and purpose of meetings, and be committed to preparing for them adequately, attending them regularly and being prepared to dedicate time to being an effective trustee.
  • Enthusiasm and motivation for the vision and mission of DWB.
  • Work to enhance the reputation of DWB and act as an effective advocate for the work done by DWB.
  • A good team player and open and willing to embrace and work through possible conflicting opinions positively, and work effectively as a board member.
  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Willingness to lead according to the values of the organisation, and be committed to (and supportive of) the purpose, objects, values and ethos of DWB.
  • Be constructive about other trustees’ opinions in discussions (and in response to staff members’ contributions at meetings).
  • Maintain confidentiality on sensitive and confidential information.
  • Analyse information and, when necessary, challenge constructively.

Your Knowledge, Skills And Experience Could Include

  • Have been on boards, committees, panels, or taken part in decision-making meetings.
  • Chairing, organising or minuting meetings.
  • Problem solving, trouble shooting and solution-focussed approaches.
  • Team work, team leadership, joint decision making.
  • Supporting financial decision making.
  • Mentoring and management of a CEO.
  • Acting as a critical friend.
  • Time, project and process management.
  • Strategic vision and the ability to focus on practical issues.
  • An interest in promoting social justice and an understanding of social, political and economic issues which may contribute systemically to mental and physical illness.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (i.e. Equal Opportunities and the Equalities Act 2010).
  • Have well-established professional networks.
  • Contribute to horizon scanning activities and developing strategic partnerships with public and private sector individuals and organisations.
  • Have been in formal or informal leadership roles.
  • Lived experience of working or living in Darnall, Attercliffe or Tinsley is also highly valued.

What Will You Be Doing?

As a trustee you’ll play an important role in contributing towards the future direction of Darnall Well Being and the impact that we make in the local community. We are looking to both expand and strengthen our Board in the following areas of expertise:

  • Sector Knowledge
  • Lived Experience
  • Critical community perspectives

We are also searching for trustees who can fulfil specific roles in the following positions:

  • Chair of the Board
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary

Our board has a good relationship with our senior management team, and prides itself on being friendly and welcoming. We also have sub-committees that provide direction on HR and Finance, so there are opportunities for trustees with specific experience or interest in these areas to get more involved.
