We are a local charity with an excellent reputation. We're seeking a Trustee who will also act as our Treasurer to maintain an overview of Wellspring’s financial affairs. Having experience of ensuring effective and appropriate financial measures and procedures are in place.

What difference will you make?

We are looking for someone who is willing to bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. Wellspring has been helping improve the quality of people's lives and in some cases, save lives, since 1994 and as the Treasurer, your role is key to the continuation of our mission. We work with anybody from any background or walk of life and the sound management of our finances is critical to our ongoing effectiveness and ability to 'be there' for people in the community of North Somerset.

Your advice and guidance on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan and overseeing of the charity’s financial risk-management process will be highly valued.

You will also be part of a caring and dynamic team who enjoy each others' company as well as what they do.

What are we looking for?

What we need in our Treasurer is

  • A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity.
  • Clear communicator with the ability to bring the financial information alive to non-finance specialists.
  • Willing to play an active role in areas such as forecasting, setting budgets, liaising with the Independent Examiner

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

In addition to the above, the Treasurer will also have the responsibilities and qualities of all trustees and be happy to join in and get along with the rest of the team.

We need you to lead on the appointment and liaison with the Independent Examiner and oversee the development and implementation of systems for appraising, mitigating, and reporting corporate risk.

You will also be acting as Company Secretary for the Charity. You will ensure that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, for example, the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies. You will be responsible for working with the Administrator to carry out payroll for staff salaries and pay suppliers monthly through HSBC Business Internet Banking.

What will you be doing?

A knowledge of charity finance would be a distinct advantage and an enthusiasm to learn, drawing from sound commercial experience and an understanding of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Wellspring’s main purpose is to provide low-cost, accessible professional counselling for young people (from age 11 upwards) and adults in North Somerset. The service was envisioned by the churches of Nailsea working together with the local GP practice. Since its foundation in 1994 the service has spread from Nailsea to cover the whole of North Somerset. Group work is sometimes delivered, e.g., Carers’ course. There is a listening service provided for young people to address concerns at an early stage.

There is a small but wonderful team of employed staff including the director. Volunteers are an essential part of the organisation and others work at a lower rate of pay than they would be paid professionally due to having a passion for the cause.

Continuing professional development is provided for counsellors and is available for people outside the organisation which has gained an excellent reputation but also acts as an income stream.

We are seeking out different funding opportunities currently and looking to sustain the service we offer, or even increase it to meet the ever-growing demand we see in the community, especially from 11-18-year-olds who are struggling with their mental health. All the decisions we make have financial implications and we need to be aware of the bigger fundraising picture, be willing to network, research, and stay on top of our financial future.

This is a crucial role as it involves preparing for presentation budgets, internal management accounts, and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees. You will ensure that proper accounting records are kept and robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves and cost management. You will also be monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity, regularly liaising with the Director and Senior Administrator.
