The Royal Anniversary Trust is a charity that celebrates and champions the outstanding work of universities and colleges across the United Kingdom. We are best known as the custodians of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education, part of the UK national honours system, recognising excellence, innovation and the positive social impact of tertiary education in the UK and worldwide.
Established in 1990 to mark the 40th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession, the Trust is an independent charity concerned with the advancement of education for public benefit. The Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Education are awarded biennially by the Monarch, recognising at the highest level of the state, outstanding creative and inspirational work in a wide variety of fields within higher and further education institutions.
In addition to the Prizes programme, some years ago the Trust established a new range of alumni programmes which seek to address issues which are important both to the tertiary education sector and to UK society as a whole. In 2026, it is leading the Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Education: USA Exchange, bringing together universities and colleges in the UK and the USA to support new transatlantic research partnerships.

The Trust is seeking to appoint up to three Trustees to play an active role in its next phase. Working with the Chair, fellow Trustees and the Chief Executive, they will help shape the Trust’s future direction, support its financial sustainability and raise its profile and impact. Trustees will also act as ambassadors for the Trust, building relationships, opening doors and using their networks to advance its work.
We are looking for people with senior leadership and Board-level experience, excellent judgement and a genuine commitment to excellence in education. Candidates will bring the credibility, communication skills and sensitivity to build relationships with stakeholders across the Palace, government, academia, business and public life. An appreciation of charity governance and the ability to provide constructive support and challenge will also be important.

Across the appointments, the Trust would particularly welcome candidates who have one or more of the following characteristics: senior business leadership, with the ability to provide sound corporate and financial guidance to the Trust and the Board; strong networks and a willingness to advocate for the Trust amongst those networks and actively assist its development programme; senior-level experience in corporate communications and associated networks, together with a willingness to help the Trust tell its story more effectively to new and wider audiences; and senior experience within the Civil Service.
