Overview
As a Tutor at the AMRC Training Centre, you will play a key role in ensuring that the AMRC Training Centre’s apprentices receive high-quality teaching by devising, designing, preparing, delivering and assessing knowledge elements of our Advanced and Higher apprenticeship programmes using active learning techniques within the classroom. You will be responsible for delivering your own units and meeting the requirements of Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework.
You will have sufficient knowledge and experience to deliver a range of common units to advanced apprentices whilst having a key focus on automation and controls, PLCs and fault finding.
Experience of teaching the EAL Diploma is desirable.
You will have very good communication skills, be able to organise your workload and time effectively, be able to work independently with minimal supervision and work collaboratively with team members.
You will hold a teaching qualification or be willing to work towards one, and a relevant qualification in engineering, manufacturing, your given subject area or equivalent experience. Industrial experience in manufacturing and engineering would be advantageous.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality teaching in engineering subjects using a variety of active learning strategies.
- Reflect on your teaching practice, taking advice from colleagues to improve your practice and apprentices’ learning experience.
- Manage the attention of apprentices in the classroom, keeping them on task and interested in the session.
- Devise and apply a range of assessment activities, including formative assessment.
- Assess apprentices’ work and provide feedback to support apprentices to improve and achieve their maximum potential.
- The tracking of marked student work is to be done promptly and accurately ensuring it is kept up to date.
- Provide academic and pastoral support to guide, challenge and inspire apprentices.
- Write, develop, and monitor individual learning plans for apprentices, updating them as required.
- Contribute to the review, planning, creation and development of the curriculum and units within.
- Produce and develop schemes of work, lesson plans, individualised learning plans and learning materials.
- Using virtual learning platforms such as Blackboard for online and hybrid teaching.
- Contribute to the development of strategies to improve apprentice the retention, attendance, achievement, and success rates of apprentices.
- Work with the Support Team to identify and support apprentices with additional learning requirements, and pastoral needs.
- Deliver commercial training courses as required.
- Take part in Open Events during evenings.
- Make a full and active contribution, as a Tutor, to the AMRC Training Centre, including the pursuit of excellence in the education of our apprentices.
- As a member of staff, you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.
- Model the conduct and behaviours required of all staff in the University’s Code of Conduct, including excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.

Essential Criteria
- Have a Level 4, or higher, qualification in Engineering / your subject area, or similar, or evidence of relevant industrial experience - Application
- Proven teaching/training ability, ideally with a teaching qualification - Application and microteach
- Ability to plan and deliver effective teaching/training sessions, supporting apprentices to meet their learning outcomes. Use a range of teaching methodologies to engage apprentices, including the use of virtual learning platforms - Interview and microteach
- Confidence to challenge apprentice behaviour such as being late to teaching sessions, eating in class and using mobile phones when not permitted. Interview and microteach
- Understanding of the academic and pastoral needs of apprentices, recognising when intervention and support is needed from other teams - Interview and Application
- Excellent customer service skills, with experience in responding efficiently and effectively to phone and email queries - Interview and Application
- Good organisational and time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines, alongside excellent attendance and punctuality - Interview and Application

Next steps in the recruitment process
It is anticipated that the selection process will take place as soon as possible after the closing date.
