About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Type Test Engineer & Test Equipment Maintenance Engineer to join our engineering team. This role is responsible for planning, carrying out, documenting, and maintaining type testing and verification activities, while also ensuring that test equipment, fixtures, electrical hardware, software, and firmware used in testing remain reliable, accurate, and fit for purpose.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Engineering, Production, Quality, and Service teams to develop and maintain test procedures, troubleshoot test failures, improve test equipment, and support the introduction and ongoing maintenance of products and test systems.
This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone with practical experience in electrical/electronic testing, test equipment, troubleshooting, hardware, firmware, and test procedures.
Key Responsibilities
1. Type Testing & Product Verification
- Plan and perform type tests, qualification tests, verification tests, and validation testing on electrical/electronic products and equipment.
- Develop and maintain test plans, test specifications, test procedures, and test documentation.
- Review product requirements and engineering specifications to determine appropriate testing requirements.
- Set up and configure test equipment, fixtures, instrumentation, and test samples.
- Carry out electrical, functional, environmental, safety, performance, and reliability testing as required.
- Record, analyse, and report test results clearly and accurately.
- Investigate failed or abnormal test results and work with Engineering to identify root causes.
- Support engineering investigations, design verification, product improvements, and engineering change activities.
- Ensure type test documentation and test records are complete, traceable, and properly maintained.
- Assist with customer-specific or regulatory testing requirements where applicable.
2. Test Equipment Maintenance & Upkeep
- Take ownership of the maintenance, reliability, and readiness of test equipment used by Engineering and Production.
- Perform routine inspection, preventative maintenance, functional checks, and troubleshooting of test equipment.
- Identify equipment that is damaged, unreliable, out of specification, or requiring repair.
- Maintain test equipment, fixtures, cables, connectors, probes, adapters, and associated hardware.
- Coordinate repairs, servicing, calibration, and replacement of test equipment when required.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment condition, maintenance, calibration, repair, and service history.
- Ensure equipment is clearly identified and its calibration/verification status is current.
- Assist in maintaining an accurate test equipment and asset register.
- Establish and maintain appropriate maintenance schedules for critical test equipment.
- Work with Engineering and Quality to determine whether equipment is suitable for continued use following a failure or repair.

3. Electrical Hardware & Test Fixtures
- Troubleshoot electrical and electronic test systems and fixtures.
- Inspect and maintain wiring, connectors, PCBs, relays, power supplies, sensors, switches, and other test hardware.
- Build, modify, and improve test fixtures and test setups as required.
- Assist Engineering with the design and modification of test equipment.
- Identify recurring hardware issues and recommend improvements.
- Support the development and implementation of new production and engineering test equipment.
- Ensure test fixtures and equipment are safe and suitable for their intended application.
4. Software & Firmware Support
- Work with Engineering to troubleshoot test software, firmware, and equipment-control issues.
- Support firmware updates and verification of test equipment where required.
- Investigate software-related nuisance failures and determine whether failures originate from the product, test equipment, software, or test procedure.
- Assist in validating changes to firmware, software, and test systems before they are released into production.
- Maintain test software and configuration documentation where applicable.
- Work with software/firmware engineers to reproduce and resolve test-related issues.
5. Test Procedure Development & Maintenance
- Create and maintain controlled test procedures and work instructions.
- Review existing test procedures and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Ensure procedures accurately reflect the current product, hardware, firmware, and test equipment.
- Update test documentation following engineering changes or product revisions.
- Standardise test methods where possible to improve repeatability and reliability.
- Train relevant personnel on new or revised test procedures.
- Ensure obsolete procedures and documentation are properly identified and removed from use.
6. Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
- Investigate test failures, intermittent failures, false failures, and nuisance failures.
- Determine whether the source of a failure is the product, test equipment, fixture, software, firmware, operator procedure, or test environment.
- Use structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis techniques.
- Collect and analyse test data to identify trends and recurring issues.
- Work with Engineering and Production to implement corrective actions.
- Verify that corrective actions have resolved the issue without introducing new problems.
7. Calibration & Measurement
- Support the calibration and verification of test and measurement equipment.
- Ensure equipment requiring calibration is identified and monitored.
- Review calibration certificates and identify issues that may affect test validity.
- Maintain traceability of measurement equipment where required.
- Assist with investigations where equipment is found to be out of calibration or potentially producing inaccurate results.
- Support compliance with relevant quality and measurement standards.

8. Engineering & Production Support
- Work closely with Engineering during new product development and product changes.
- Support Production when test equipment or test processes cause failures or interruptions.
- Assist with the introduction of new products into manufacturing.
- Provide technical support for test equipment and testing issues.
- Participate in engineering reviews, problem-solving meetings, and improvement projects.
- Communicate technical findings clearly to engineers, production personnel, and management.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Proven experience as a Test Engineer, Test Technician, Electrical/Electronic Engineer, Validation Engineer, or similar role.
- Practical experience working with electrical and electronic test equipment.
- Experience developing, writing, and maintaining test procedures and test documentation.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical/electronic hardware and test systems.
- Experience diagnosing test failures and performing root-cause investigations.
- Experience working with firmware and/or software-controlled test equipment.
- Understanding of electrical and electronic measurement principles.
- Experience with calibration, verification, or maintenance of test equipment.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
- Strong documentation and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with Engineering and Production.
Desirable
- Experience with type testing, qualification testing, validation, or compliance testing.
- Experience working with transformers, power electronics, electrical safety testing, or similar equipment.
- Experience with HiPot/withstand testing, insulation resistance, resistance, inductance, capacitance, voltage, current, power, or frequency measurements.
- Experience working with automated test systems.
- Experience with test fixtures and production test equipment.
- Experience troubleshooting PLCs, microcontrollers, embedded systems, or firmware-controlled equipment.
- Knowledge of relevant electrical safety and product testing standards.
- Experience with calibration systems and laboratory/test equipment management.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
