Contract: Part-time, 2–3 days per week

Working arrangement: Flexible

Contract type: Contract

We’re looking for an experienced Product UI/UX Designer to work with us on a part-time contract basis, typically 2–3 days per week.

This is not a role for someone who simply takes a brief and turns it into polished screens.

We’re looking for someone who thinks about the product as a whole: the customer problem, the journey, the commercial objective, the technology behind it and what actually needs to be built.

You’ll work closely with our product, technology and commercial teams to turn ideas, customer needs and sometimes imperfect requirements into simple, intuitive digital experiences.

You should be comfortable asking questions, challenging assumptions and pushing back when you believe there is a better solution.

The customer should sit at the heart of how you think.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own UI/UX design across key areas of our digital products, from early thinking through to developer-ready designs.
  • Translate customer problems, business requirements and technical constraints into clear user journeys and interfaces.
  • Work closely with developers and technical stakeholders throughout the design and build process.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity product designs.
  • Identify friction, unnecessary complexity and gaps within existing customer journeys.
  • Challenge requirements where they do not serve the customer or create unnecessary product complexity.
  • Help the team distinguish between what customers actually need and what we simply could build.
  • Use customer insight, product data, feedback and testing to inform design decisions.
  • Consider the full customer journey rather than designing individual screens in isolation.
  • Develop and maintain consistency across components, patterns and the wider design system.
  • Design responsively across desktop and mobile experiences.
  • Work with developers during implementation to ensure the final product retains the intent and quality of the design.
  • Contribute to wider product discussions around prioritisation, functionality and future development.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

How We’d Like You to Work

We want someone who is collaborative, but not passive.

You should be comfortable sitting with a developer and working through why something should function in a particular way, while also understanding when technical constraints require a different approach.

Equally, if a proposed feature, flow or requirement doesn't make sense for the customer, we expect you to say so.

You’ll probably enjoy this role if you naturally ask questions such as:

  • What problem are we actually trying to solve?
  • Who is this for?
  • What does the customer need at this point in their journey?
  • Is there a simpler way of doing this?
  • What happens before and after this interaction?
  • How will we know whether this works?

Essential Experience

  • Strong professional experience in UI/UX, digital product design or product-led design.
  • Experience working directly with software engineers and technical teams.
  • A portfolio demonstrating live digital products rather than purely conceptual design work.
  • Strong understanding of UX principles, user journeys, information architecture and interaction design.
  • Strong UI craft and attention to detail.
  • Experience taking work from initial problem or requirement through to developer handover.
  • Confidence using Figma and modern collaborative design workflows.
  • Ability to explain and defend design decisions clearly.
  • Comfortable challenging stakeholders constructively.
  • Strong understanding of responsive and mobile-first design.
  • Able to work independently within a relatively fast-moving environment.

Desirable

  • Previous experience as a Product Designer or within a broader product role.
  • Experience working in a start-up, scale-up or technology-led business.
  • Experience working on customer-facing SaaS, marketplace, e-commerce or platform products.
  • Experience using analytics, behavioural data or customer research to influence product decisions.
  • Experience creating or evolving design systems and component libraries.
  • Understanding of product management principles, prioritisation and MVP development.
  • Enough technical understanding to have productive conversations with engineers about feasibility and implementation.
  • Experience working with AI-enabled or data-led products would be useful.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role isn't measured by how many screens are designed.

It means:

  • Customers can understand and use the product with less friction.
  • User journeys become simpler, clearer and more consistent.
  • Design decisions have a clear rationale rooted in customer needs.
  • Developers receive thoughtful, practical and implementation-ready designs.
  • Product and technology teams involve design earlier in the decision-making process.
  • Poor assumptions and unnecessary complexity are challenged before development time is spent on them.
  • The product develops a coherent design language rather than becoming a collection of individual features.
  • We are increasingly able to connect customer insight, product thinking, design and technology when deciding what to build.

The Person

You are likely someone who sits somewhere between UI/UX and Product Design.

You care about how something looks, but you care even more about whether it makes sense.

You’re curious about customers, commercially aware and comfortable working with technical teams. You don't need every requirement perfectly defined before you start; you can work through ambiguity and help turn it into something tangible.

Most importantly, you have enough confidence in your craft to challenge the team when necessary, without becoming territorial about your ideas.

We want someone who can become a trusted product partner to the team — not simply the person we send design requests to.
