Warehouse Operative
Reports to: Warehouse Supervisor
Location: Milton Keynes
Department: Warehouse – Fabric/Wallpaper
Scope of Job
To support the efficient operation of the warehouse through the receipt, storage, movement, picking, packing, and dispatch of goods. The postholder may work across multiple warehouse functions, including goods in, replenishment, stock control, production support, dispatch, and marketing prop management, and will be expected to work flexibly to meet changing business needs.
Purpose
The role undertakes a range of operational activities in line with agreed procedures, quality standards, and service requirements, helping to ensure that products and materials are received, stored, picked, packed, and dispatched correctly and on time. The postholder may work across different warehouse activities according to business need and may be required to work shifts in accordance with their terms and conditions of employment.
Responsibilities
- Warehouse operations: Carry out warehouse activities as allocated, which may include goods in, put-away, stock movements, replenishment, picking, packing, fabric or wallcovering handling, dispatch, and production support.
- Goods in and stock control: Receive and check incoming goods against the relevant documentation. Report shortages, damage, discrepancies, or quality concerns promptly and place stock in the correct location.
- Picking, packing, and dispatch: Pick and pack goods accurately and in the required format, ensuring products are suitably protected, correctly labelled, and ready for collection or dispatch.
- Quality: Complete appropriate checks at each stage of the process. Handle products carefully and raise any damage, defects, or concerns in line with the agreed process.
- Systems and records: Use relevant warehouse systems, scanners, and documentation accurately to record stock movements and maintain reliable information. This may include locating, reserving, tracking, booking out, and booking back in marketing props where required.
- Warehouse administration: Complete general warehouse administration accurately and within required timescales. This may include processing and filing documentation, updating stock and order records, responding to routine email or telephone enquiries, producing labels and paperwork, maintaining spreadsheets, and supporting the coordination of deliveries, collections, stock movements, and other warehouse activities.
- Communication and teamwork: Communicate clearly with colleagues, the Warehouse Senior, Warehouse Supervisor, and relevant internal teams. Work flexibly with others to support changing operational priorities and service levels.
- Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised working area. Store equipment safely and contribute to effective workplace standards.
- Health, safety, and wellbeing: Follow all health and safety requirements, safe systems of work, and manual handling guidance. Use required personal protective equipment and report accidents, near misses, hazards, unsafe conditions, or damaged equipment immediately.
- Continuous improvement: Contribute ideas that may improve safety, quality, accuracy, service, or efficiency and support agreed changes to working practices.
- Learning and flexibility: Complete required training, maintain competence for allocated duties, and provide reasonable support across warehouse activities in line with skills, training, and business requirements.

- Work is completed safely and in accordance with procedures and training.
- Goods are received, located, picked, packed, and dispatched accurately and within agreed timescales.
- Quality checks are completed, and errors, damage, or discrepancies are identified and escalated promptly.
- Warehouse systems and records are updated accurately, and stock remains traceable.
- Productivity and service expectations are met while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Working areas are kept clean, organised, and compliant with housekeeping requirements.
- The postholder contributes positively to teamwork, communication, and operational flexibility.

Qualifications
- No specific formal qualification is essential unless required for a particular activity.
- A valid licence or authorisation is required before operating relevant mechanical handling equipment.
Experience & Skills
- A good standard of literacy and numeracy is required to understand instructions, complete records, and check quantities.
- Previous warehouse, distribution, manufacturing, or stock-handling experience is desirable.
- Able to follow procedures, instructions, and safe systems of work consistently.
- Good attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy and quality.
- A logical, organised approach with the ability to prioritise allocated work and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, with a helpful and customer-focused approach.
- Basic digital skills and confidence using warehouse systems, email, and standard Microsoft applications, or the ability to learn them.
- Able to work flexibly across warehouse activities and adapt to changing operational requirements.
- Able to undertake the physical requirements of the role safely, including manual handling, standing, and moving goods, with appropriate equipment, training, and reasonable adjustments where applicable.
