The Purchaser
The Purchaser is responsible for sourcing and purchasing goods, materials, and services required by the business. The role involves managing supplier relationships, negotiating pricing and delivery terms, ensuring stock availability, and supporting operational requirements while achieving best value for the Company.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and procure goods, materials, equipment, and services in line with business requirements.
- Obtain and evaluate supplier quotations, ensuring the most cost-effective purchasing decisions are made.
- Raise and manage purchase orders accurately and in a timely manner.
- Liaise with suppliers to confirm pricing, lead times, and delivery schedules.
- Monitor supplier performance regarding quality, cost, and service levels.
- Resolve supply issues, shortages, delivery delays, and invoice discrepancies.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records and supplier information.
- Work closely with Operations, Engineering, Stores, and Finance teams to understand purchasing requirements.
- Monitor stock levels and support inventory management activities.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
- Ensure all purchases comply with company procedures and budgetary controls.
- Assist in developing and maintaining preferred supplier agreements.
- Produce purchasing reports and management information as required.
- Support business continuity by identifying alternative suppliers and mitigating supply chain risks.

Person Specification
Essential
- Previous experience in a purchasing, procurement, or buying role within a small business.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- Good commercial awareness and cost-control focus.
- Experience using ERP or purchasing management systems.
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Ability to build and maintain effective supplier relationships.

Desirable
- Experience within an engineering, manufacturing, utilities, or technical environment.
- CIPS qualification (or working towards).
- Knowledge of inventory management and stock control principles.
- Experience in contract negotiation and supplier management.
